First of all I am new to the SHO experience . I enjoy unique rides and have a stable full. This being the newest. I bought it a few months back and have been reading all I can about them before I put it on the road. The seller was a kid and said it needed to much work for him. He did mention a "bad transmission". I think he took it to a garage and the price tag to fix it scared him off. His loss my gain. I do all the work I can on all my stuff, not afraid to try something new. I have a 1999 continental that I think has the same trans. and that one does not move. Trans problem. The SHO still moves but I'm not sure for how long. I hope with help from this forum I can find a simple problem:hail: Am I correct in assuming that this 93 has an AX4N? I know there are a few variants of this trans. Still learning. My problem is, cold it gets rolling with no problem. Once it comes up to temp. It starts to have problems. On the first ride for gas after about 6 miles came to a stop sign. Went to leave , nothing. When to first gear, still nothing. Then a hard shift and off we went. Next stop about a mile away it does the same thing. This time I cycled it to park then to drive and off we went. This worked the next few times. The last stop it didnt work. But after about 2 minutes it took off and being the smart guy I am the next stop was the barn. The last 100 feet it did stop moving. Then engaged again to get me into its parking space. Its cooling down now and in a few days I will try another trip to see if it does the same thing. I am sure it will, The CE light did come on about 2 minutes into the ride. The OD switch doesnt seem to do anything. And there is no OD light on the dash. Burnt out bulb? Anyones guess at this point. The initial ride it did shift well one. two, three, Four? Not certain about four. I did put the spurrs to it once and it shifted hard and took off. One of these in its prime condition must be a great ride. I hope to find out. I have not checked for codes, No reader. Oil could use a change but level is good. Any thoughts?
The next thing I have found online is a site that lists bulk/wholesale , discontinued obsolete stuff. One of the things on there is a vender with AX4N transaxle for a 2000 up Ford Tauras/Sable. Brand new not rebuilt. Can anyone tell me if these will work in my 93 SHO. He has ten of them and the price is right, but is the transaxle the correct one. Catch, It is member only and a hefty cost to join. But the transaxles are cheap. There are 10 of them If we did some sort of group buy it would offset the membership fee. Anyone have any comments on if these will work in the SHO please speak thanks

Look on the bottom of the tranny pan for the correct tranny info.it will be stamped on the pan. I am no tranny expert but I do not believe any others will work except for the SHO ATX unit..Enjoy your SHO. After you replace the tranny...

ive had two regular taurus gl's that did somethin like that before they died. a 1992 with an axod or w/e and a 1997 with an ax4n. they both had the torque converters go out. i kept driving the 1992 because i payed $100 for it. i gave the car to my uncle, he had it fixed. the torque converter quit and in turn killed the tranny. i havnt dug into the 97 yet, but i lost 2nd, 3rd, and 4th when that car went out. i drove 15miles in first gear at 5am on a sunday to get the car home. 35mph never felt any slower. if ya know a good tranny shop take it to them see what they say. i know my local shop could test the trannys to see if its good or bad if ya brought it in

The thing with tranny shops is they tend to want to rebuild. I am sure mine is on the way out . But I'm always looking for the simple answer. I want to know why. I understand why a shop pushes a rebuild because thats where the money is. And they dont want to try the fix that doesnt require removal and rebuild because if it doesnt last then they have egg on their face.I have heard so many stories about the shift between first and second is a little stiff and they drop it off at a major tranny shop only to come back after a "diagnosis" to find it in peices on the floor never to go back together again short of a rebuild when it might have been a simple fix. Maybe not. They will never know. The AT is the one part on cars/trucks that most DIY mechanics wont touch. Understanably too. A complete rebuild is a sure thing...or should be.

Convert it to an MTX(manual transmission) if you don't mind driving a stick. Do a quick search on it. I'm sure you will find some info on it and it will be much funner to drive IMO. The conversion might be alot cheaper too but i'm not positive on that.

I might be way off on this, but VSS maybe? VSS is the vehicle speed sensor btw, if thats busted (or even just old and still working half assed) I know it can make atx trannys shift like crap. They are like 20-25 bucks, it might be worth a shot. Also if you do plan on getting another tranny put in, having a new VSS cant hurt anyway.

Jimco,

Regardless of what your pan says, you have an AX4S transmission. The AX4N is not a replacement.

Your tranny is toast. Stick a fork in it. Due to the amount of labor required to pull the transmission, tear it down to "repair" it, then reassemble and re-install it, it is just plain stupid not to rebuild it at the same time for the small, incremental cost.

You have an internal failure. A VSS is not going to to fix it. My guess is a busted forward clutch drum.

X2,
The tranny is owned. I can get a Ford reman at the dealer around here for $1400 with the 3/36 warranty. You might want to try a local dealer as most tranny shops will want $2k+ for a rebuild.
Sounds like the kid you bought it off was giving it some hot suppers with a side of smokey burnouts. Oh yea and when you get it fixed abide by the first rule of owning a SHO no matter if you have an ATX or MTX dont do burnouts.:thumb:
