My son's '93 ATX overheated last night and blew the upper radiator hose off. When picked him up, the car cranked but wouldn't start so we left it. This morning we went out and it started right up so we headed home. Within a mile or so, the temp gage was pegged so we pulled over, went a got a new thermostat and swapped it out. Headed home again and same thing happened - within a mile the gage was pegged.

Any ideas on what else will cause it to overheat? We made sure it had plenty of anti-freeze both times.

I am not exactly sure how you would tell on this motor as I am very new to it. I would check around the pump for leaks and watch it while motor is running to make sure it turns. Possibly take the drive belt off and twist pump by hand and see if it turns smooth or if it feels odd.

If you filled it up then went driving right away.. you probally just encounterd the air bubble. Did you use a motorcraft thermostat by chance?

When replacing the coolant, we squeezed the upper radiator hose to remove as much air as possible. I put in a Stant 195-degree thermostat from the local parts store. Why do you ask about the Motorcraft?

I am still leaning toward water pump. If your hose blew off makes me think that pump went out and coolant in block started to boil due to it not circulating causing high pressures and blowing off your hose.

the motorcraft has the jiggle valve on it a lot of the after markets do not have this valve and the system will not bleed the air out right, and if you have to do the water pump, you might as well do the front 60k while your at it

notice the little valve on top of the thermostat thats the jiggle valve

Thanks for all the info everyone. The local shop has the car and says it's a blown head gasket. Missing on 1 cylinder and blowing white smoke that smells of antifreeze. I'll have them verify the condition of the water pump and make sure the correct thermostat gets put in.

if there doing the HG you might as well have them install the new timing belt, water pump,CPS, i have a 93 also and posted on the v6 e-mail boards,

you may need a head for the car also this is what mine looked like when i pulled it down, it was the rear head on mine.
