Quick history:
-I'm the original owner.
Mechanical:
-new clutch and flywheel x3
-new steering rack
-new powersteering pump and hoses
-new brake pads on all 4's
-new drive shaft assemblies when universals went out
-spark plug and valve cover seals(see electricals)
-new struts
-Have replaced with proper sho engine thermostat when original one stuck closed('96?)
-Had timing belt replaced back in '96 or '97

Electrical:
-Replaced irc when a shorted ac pressure switch fried it.Replaced ac pressure switch('95?)

What Happened:
-Had the oil in the spark plug wells.
-While idling in my yard engine stalled, rumble, white smoke or vapor. Then would not restart. Ok, time I dealt with the oil in the plug wells. Replaced spark plugs, plugwires, valve cover seals, valve cover spark plug oil seals, etc, with new SHO specific parts. Still no start. Just continueously turns over. Rarely, it will fire, then within a couple of seconds, stall. ('01?)
-Still won't start.
-Checked spark at coil. Good spark from all 6 legs.

When I turn the ignition switch, I can here the fuel pump spool up and make pressure. I went to the fuel filter in front of the rear rt wheel well, removed outlet line and there is fuel pressure there. Went to schrader valve at fuel manifold and there's fuel pressure there. Tank is 3/4f.

I have checked, rechecked, even ran an additional ground strap from the intake manifold to ground.

I have a multi-meter, and test light. I do not have any other engine trouble-shooting equipment, ie engine analyzer, dwell meter, timing gun, pressure gauges, etc.

If I get a handheld analyzer, will you all recommend one that is known to work on '89 SHO's please.

There is nothing "hopped-up" on this car. All stock whenever possible.

-Year '04 and SHO is still broke.

Any and all tips appreciated.

Thanks,

JimB

Have you ever recieved the "check engine" light?

I don't know about the 89, but my 93 did the same after replacing the same as you. Turned out to be the IAB/IAC valve behind the throttle body, connector was unplugged. I assume it can cause the same in the 89. It would start if you gave it gas and stall if you let off the gas, and idle for a second.

Welcome to the Forum!

There is no handheld scanner needed except for a paperclip.

I would recommend getting and using a fuel pressure guage. While you indicate that there is pressure at the Schraeder valve, you don't know how much or if it is adequate. FWIW, at intial pressurization, you should have nearly 40 psi. Once the engine starts and the fuel pressure regulator receives vacuum, the pressure should drop to around 30 psi.
