89 MTX Maintenance help~

Alright, my SHO's currently up in my school's auto getting one of many things:

Intake and Valve cover gaskets replaced
Spark Plugs
Wires
Brakes (Two front calipers replaced (aswell as rotors) new pads all around.

Anywho, they just got the intake off yesterday and my friends are worried about dropping in in the solvent tank because of the tubes and electronics attached to it.

Can you guys recommend any chemicals I should use to clean out my intake? I also want to change the tranny fluid (and get a coolent flush and oil change) If you have any fluids that you think are the best, please tell me.

Patrick,

The solvent tank could possibly strip the paint off your intake. You can clean your intake with brake or carb cleaner. I used a plastic brush on a metal extension to get the hard to reach areas. You can find something like that at your local hardware store.

For your MTX fluid use ATF. Some people like GM synchromesh, some like mobil one. Do a search, there's tons of info here. DO NOT use gear oil. You'll screw stuff up.

I just started cleaning my intake with carb cleaner. It was working great till I ran out of it. I think it costs around $2(wasn't there when it was purchased) for a can and you would probably need at least 4, possibly more. As for the other things, I'm not too sure.

Wait, if I understand correctly, you aren't supposed to use gear oil? Is there a specific reason for that? Because I was going to change mine this weekend and I was going to use castrol 80w90 gear oil...

I just started cleaning my intake with carb cleaner. It was working great till I ran out of it.

I just got done cleaning my intake, took about 6 supersize cans of carb and choke cleaner and alot of patience, I would reccomend using this stuff, it does work good, just spray it on then scrub off what you can and soon enough you'll have a sqeaky clean intake manifold. I would try to keep this stuff off the outside of the manifold if you value the color it is, I didnt and my manifold looks like the goldish color faded towards maybe a more silvery gold, but I dont really know because im rather colorblind so im not good with colors, nor do i care what color my manifold is.

By the way Patrick use motorcraft plugs, I hear other plugs cause problems. I found BOSCH plugs in mine that were all burnt up because theyre the wrong plug with the wrong heat rating.

Berryman's B12 from WALL MART is the best! Takes almost No scrubbing to get-r-clean.
