Question... would there be a difference in regards to the engine wiring harness on 3.0 Gen 1 1989 vs 1991 ( 1991 was built Dec 91) I just went to hook up the harness assuming they were the same but the main connection under the intake side are both male ends ..... Maybe I am just tired and not thinking clearly but somethings is not right. I am placing a 1989 engine in a 1991 gen 1. I can take the harness off the 1991 and replace it but that sucks! PIA. I am hoping I am just not seeing the problem but I fear I will have to switch it out! I know when you do a 3.2 swap you have to change it but I did not see this coming.

Which connector and to which component (harness extension, injector, sensor, etc.) does that go to?

The easier solution may be to change that item, versus the entire engine harness assembly, especially if it is a single item.

Many times (especially with older vehicles), the change in an entire harness assembly may simply be in the connector(s) - the rest of the harness and the item(s) connecting to it are the same. Manufacturers often change connectors due to availability, pricing, or even prior engineering design defects.

Are you referring to the connections at the front of the motor (passenger side) or at the back near the throttle body? If you can get a picture of the connection in question that would help also.

some 89 came with that stupid male connections near the cam sensor, I learned that the hard way, it wont connect. you need a 90 and up harness

Again - post pictures of both/all connectors.

:bonk:

And are the wire harness wire colors the same ?

It may be possible to pin-out the connectors and actually change the connectors, versus changing the entire harness or splicing it. The latter you will ruin one harness, and you risk ruining both.

the short answer is yes, they are quite a bit different.

the best thing would be to put the proper year wiring on the "new" motor.

Now that I have had a good night sleep and thought about this...... I am going to take the harness off the engine that came out of the car(91 3.0) and replace the one that is on the engine I put in (89 3.0) NOTE to SELF ! Always check the main wiring harness connecttion that is under the throttle body on the engine you take out and compare it to the engine you are putting in to make sure they are the same..... It is much easier to change the harness on an engine stand then in the car... PIA

Helpful information below

I think this is how they break down, but there are even differences in colors during the same range (like 92 is slightly different coloration from 93, but I think they are interchangable). I am not sure on the alternators, as Ford did not always change at specific years.

94/95 MTX (Mega Fuses, smaller starter. 94/95 larger alternator, 134A A/C, VAPS rack)
93 MTX (Mega Fuses, smaller starter, 92/93 smaller alternator, R12, VAPS rack)
92 MTX (Mega Fuses, smaller starter. 92/93 smaller alternator, R12, Non-VAPS rack)
90/91 MTX (furable links, larger starter. 89/91 smaller alternator, R12, Non-VAPS rack)
89 MTX (fusable links, larger starter, 89 specific alternator, R12, non-VAPS rack, NO AIR BAGS, NO ABS)

I am not sure of all the differences, but you may need to transfer the harnesses across. I have transplanted a 3.2 into an 89 and an 89 engine into a 94 MTX, so anything is possible. It is not that bad to swap the harness even when it is in the car.
