I'm a pretty good MTX driver... or I could have said that at one time. :(

Recently, I pushed my SHO a little too far.

Scenario:

Racing down I-495 near Rt-50 at 85mph in 3rd gear, I went to drop the car in 4th and OOPS! caught second gear instead! Lost traction on the drive wheels due to the incredibly high RPM's (could guess it was approx 9500, but tach was pegged). Once I regained control of the car, I pulled it out of second gear and eased the car back into fourth. Everything seemed fine except my ego suffered a bit. Once I pulled off the highway I noticed a rattle at lower RPM's.

Now, here's what's happening...

In neutral, revving the engine it rattles at all RPM levels but horribly under 3k. The same rattle, but worse in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear again mostly at lower RPM's. The rattle seems to disappear in fourth and fifth gear.

The SHO is a '92 STOCK except for K&N air filter and I removed the moronic Ford "air reducer" infront of the intake before the airbox (I swear I felt a 5 Hp gain wink

I know very little in this area but some of my more knowledgable friends seem to think that I bent the flywheel or broke a large piece of the clutch completely off. Something feels bent to me, but again, I don't know what?!?!?!?!?

Anyone have a clue what would most likely have happened to the SHO in the above scenario? or has anyone had a similar incident? (I wouldn't have admitted it either, but I gotta get it fixed ASAP)

Thanks in advance,

SHO-Phan

Forgot an important detail...

Now you have to muscle the car into 1st or 2nd gear. If you don't have big guns, you'll think it's in gear but release the clutch and it grinds horribly...

There seems to be 3 stages of "in gear". Basically, while pushing it into first or second gear there are a series of 3 clicks before the stick is actually positioned in gear. This is a new symptom that arose as a result of the above incident...

This really sux. I have loved my SHO like a son/daughter for both years I've owned it.

Must be the Blue / Gray 92 thing...

Contact SHOTIME on here; his 92 blue did the same thing with a missed shift & pegged tach.

Good luck!

Ouch. One **** of a first post.

Im not sure on the specifics, but you have done great wrong to your clutch and transmission. Something in there is gone, thats for sure. Wait a few, and someone will pinpoint.

This is my first post, but I'm a long-time reader...

This is the one and only problem I've ever had with the car. 99,000 miles and the synchro's are iffy. That's the only thing I can blame for f'ing up the shift. wink

Maybe you took the if out of them. Does sound clutch/tranny related but hard to diagnose sounds over the web.

It is not uncommon to damage the clutch pressure plate when you over rev on a down shift. The pressure plate straps (which are one of the big weak links in a diaphram clutch) are designed for tension, are compressed and bend. This uncenters the pressure plate in the clutch cover, causing big time vibrations.

Its the crappy rivets on the stock pressure plate.

Your deffinatly looking at a clutch replacement my friend.

The car is shifting hard because the pressure plate being screwed up and its out of balance.

So 200 dollar clutch kit, and some serious labor.

I did the exact same thing in my 92 a little over a month ago. I had to double clutch to get it to shift and had the same rattle you're speaking of. I thought maybe the tranny was screwed up or something. What really sucks is I just replaced the clutch in 4000 miles prior to that incident. Well, the moral of the story was I got to replace my clutch again. The tob was pretty much destroyed and the flywheel had to be machined. So $650 later (including labor obviously) the SHO was good as new. I still get sick thinking I've spent $1300 on clutches in the last 3 months!!

Missed shifts shoot

I would suspect rod bearings, a sudden jolt on a motor will eat them up pretty fast.

Its making the noise only under low RPM..

It was on OEM replacement clutch. I just took it to the transmission shop and had them replace it. I would have to assume it was a ford clutch. Would the warranty cover an incident like what I did?

I just did the same thing last week. It definately is the clutch. Just as Tomw stated, its the straps.they are probably all bent to ****. i pulled mine and those straps were making a U shape. I am replacing the tranny too, had metal in the drained fluid along with a fine gritty powder.

Not to get too OT here but something that caught my eye..... First of all, sorry to hear about your SHO, best of luck with the repairs. Secondly, any one have any more info on removing this "moronic Ford 'air reducer'"? I have never heard of that (I've been reading here for quite some time) and would like to know more.

P.S. I searched the forums, found nothing.
Thanks,
Wes

I have to agree, the LOW rpm rattling? hmm heard that once, no, twice. Why would the PP rattle? (asking) When I broke one of the straps on my PP (which Toolboy79 replaced :-D) it would grind going into gear......

BTW, I'm out your way, look for a black Gen I with slicers and a mustang wing...

Justakid,

There talking about the silencer cone in the air box in side the wheel well, take your left signal light out and there it is!

As far as the 85 2nd gear change, I'm with the TOB, mine made the same sound at any thing below 3K, got a whole clutch kit and it's been fine ever sence.
