hey all,

I just ordered a zex nitrous kit(thanks for the info cohiba!) and need to have my '60k' done. I usualy take care of the nuts and bolts myself, but would like this done 'right' the first time.

Is this '60k' that everyone refers to something put together by sho owners/knowitalls or a service the dealer offers (for probably way to much) ?

And what kind of pricetag can i expect for this ?

Thanks,

Mark

It is a factory recommended thing, but, if you are handy and have plenty of time, do it yourself. Or hire sdpatt. The garage flat rate hacks will blow through it.

sdpatt has posted his suggested shopping list several times including sources and pricing.

perhaps he will post it again. It would be a great addition to the FAQs.

That sounds like a lot of fun, but i think i would rather have someone do it. Too bad sdpat is in texas somewhere, or i would definetly concider hiring him (if he is up for that anyway).

Anyone eager and able around Lincoln (since i enjoy driving this thing i dont mind a lil travel) that would be willing to complete this for me ? for a reasonable fee ofcourse. Or maybe a 'recomended' shop.

Thanks for the input,

I am going to go out on a limb here and suggest something for the first time (I think). Awhile back, I did a 60K service on an engine that I planned on using for a 3.2L swap w/ blower. It was so easy with the engine out of the car, I couldn't believe it. I had heard so many horror stories that I figured it would be an utter nightmare with me at the helm. I think that if you have the time, take out the engine and do it. Rent a hoist and stand, and go to town on the motor. Anyone else think this may be a better idea. At least then you can take your time, you don't get the muscle cramps and aches from standing over an engine, and you can see what you are doing a lot easier. Just a thought

That sounds like an excellent idea but how hard is taking an engine out and putting it back in?

I like the looks of Fred's new engine as it looked like he really got to clean the heck out of it since it was out of the car. Considering that myself but I'm just concerned about whether I have the tools and knowledge to take it out (or more importantly, put it back in).

Mark, the parts are very expensive all by themselves. The labor will be a killer. My advise is to get the 60k video Mark Nunnally sells and do it yourself with help from the forum if you get stuck. It looks intimidating but really it isn't that hard. I just watched the video today getting myself psyched up to get back in there. You can do this.

I just finished a 60K service (at 120,000 miles)on a local gentleman's 1993 3.0L yesterday, and have posted some of the pictures on my PhotoIsland site. To see the pictures of Darryl Culpepper's "young" SHO (and several others), click the address below and enter the guest password: service

The prices on that list posted above are a bit higher that what you must pay to get the same parts from other sources. Yes, I have a list and yes, I have posted parts of it before in the Forum. For having all of the services performed (valve gapping, cleaning) and parts installed (plugs, valve cover seals, plug well seals, oxygen sensors, front main seal, water pump, crankshaft position sensor, timing belt, accessory belt(s)), you can expect labor charges in the $1K+ range. A big "+" if you go to a dealership with the added joy of usually finding the job wasn't done right.

The car I worked on the last couple of days had been worked on at it's 60,000 mile service by FPS in Atlanta, GA. It was nice to work on an engine that hadn't gone over 120,000 miles without any service. However, I found the rear, lower intake bracket bolts to be missing or loose. The valve cover bolts to be only finger tight (and leaking). Several of the plugs were only finger tight. RTV was used in large amounts on the plug wells which were still full of oil (there are two sides to a seal - putting RTV on only one side is not much help). The valves were still gapped fairly well (9 out of spec high), but most of the shims had the numbered side up and were previously used shims. I replaced all 24 shims and used 16 new shims. Once again, the #4 exhaust valves were the farthest out of spec at .408mm and .432mm on a range of .25mm to 35mm.

The car ran like a smooth, purring cat when finished. One that just happens to turn into a lion when provoked. It ran like the SHO engine was designed to run. Long live the SHO. It just takes TLC.

Thanks for all the info and suggestions people! Another reason I like my SHO, its the ONLY car i have ever owned where the poeple are as cool as their rides, they even wave when you pass a similar car (and thats no shit).

I still feel rather shaky about doing this myself. Performance+ lists the 60K for $675 including labor, seems pretty decent imho, concidering the prices for some of the parts listed. And it includes the valves (basicly the only thing that prevents me from doing it myself).

Its 'only' 550 miles or so away, and concidering that I just drove 1900 to pick up the kids from grandma, that seems like nothing :)

Has anyone ever had PP take care of their car and would it be worth the drive ?

Thanks again,

Mark

Where in Ontario are you, mike?

There is (was?) a 94 with a bad tranny in the guelph area for 1200cdn. I was think of buying it for parts and to tinker under the hood...seemed like the perfect oppritunity to try something like this.

The 60K from Performance Plus includes the basics of the valve gapping, new plugs, timing belt and a few other minor parts not engine related. Check their web site to be sure. Of the long list of parts above, my 262,000 mile car has never had several of them replaced such as the timing chain tensioners, the temperature sender and several of the hoses.
