When you do the valve shims do you have to tear the lower/front of the motor apart ie. do you have to take anything loose such as the crank pully and timingbelt, or is there a way to turn the cams without touching the front. What I'm trying to do is gap the valves and then order the shims I need verses ordering 100-200 dollars of shims hoping to get what I may need.

What I did with mine was bump the starter.

Use a socket wrench with a 19mm nut on the crank damper bolt to turn the engine clockwise (top of damper to the front of the car). Never turn the crank without all of the shims in place.

The only catch with that method is that even if you measure the gap and calculate the new shim that should get the gap on the nominal spec, there is no guarantee that the calculated shim will do the job. Only the feeler gauge will determine if the gap is correct.

You do not have to take anything off the front of the engine. This also points out that there are no common engine disassemblies between the valve gapping and timing belt change jobs. There is nothing to gain by doing them together. That way you can schedule them when most convenient.
