I realize I originally posted this to what was a fairly old thread...

...and as such many may not have seen it. So I've reposted it here in case you were interested.

Just for the **** of it I looked the 60K question up in my 1995 Ford Factory Service Manual (the dealer's mechanics manual published by Ford Technical Publications Department) which covers all Taurus's including both SHO's for that year. Here's what I found, not word for word, but at least in spirit:
----------
60K Service (Severe Duty Schedule)
1) Oil every 3K
2) Inspect cooling system, hoses, clamps, coolant strength every 15K
3) replace PCV valve (3.0 and 3.8L engines only - excluding SHO's)
4) Replace spark plugs
5) Inspect drive belts
6) Replace air cleaner element
7) Inspect exhaust heat shields
8) Inspect front and rear breaks
9) rotate tires
100K Service (Severe Duty Shedule)
1) Replace camshaft drive belt and adjust valve lash (3.0 and 3.2L SHO's only)
---------
Yeah, that's the ONLY item listed. This might explain why a dealer mechanic only wants $300 for the 60K. Only...! It would be interesting to go in and ask for a quote on the 100K service. Bet ya that's a bit more than $300.
The Normal Duty Schedule additionally adds only those things (like ATX fluid change, battery check, etc. ) that were checked earlier in the more aggressive Severe Duty Schedule.
Interestingly, oil changes, plugs, coolant, air filter AND timing belt/valve lash are listed as "Item for Emission Control Service." Could just be a CYA for Ford with respect to the EPA's requirements.
There are clearly those here who care for and pamper their machines to a greater degree that the factory maintenance schedule requiers. Just thought I'd list what they suggest for what it's worth. Hope someone finds this helpful.
