60K anyone?

Soooooo....... My SHO DESPERATELY needs a 60K. Chances are it has never had one, at least not after the first one, and it has about 150K on it. The pug wells are full of oil. The belts are squeaking.

Tonight, I stopped to get some gas. Saw ALOT of smoke coming out of the engine bay. Apparently it's oil. As far as I can tell, it is the rear (left) valve cover seal, or one of the plugs back there.

I know I SHOULD have done the 60K when I bought the car, but I'm too lazy and all my spare money went to the balljoint, and the radiator and some other misc. stuff about a month after I bought the car. Plus there were no signs of it needing a 60K when I bought it. No abnormal noises or anything whatsoever.

So, I'm asking for some help here. I was wondering if someone on here would be willing to do at least the upper 60K for me or help me out with it. It'd be nice if SuperHO or Joe could do it for me or help me with it, seeing as they are the closest that I know of, and, as far as I know, they both know how to do it. Alex actually had a good idea tonight. I am gonna be gone camping in early August, and he said I may be able to leave my SHO with someone over that time. I'm not gonna need it then, and whoever may be doing it won't be rushed for time, cause I'll be gone for about a week and a half.

Anywho, I'd obviously be paying whomever for their time, and also thought somebody might actually have some spare parts for the 60K (i.e. tool kit, shims, etc.) Just trying to get some ideas for it right now. I'll be getting most of the parts (spark plugs, wires, seals, and all that stuff) hopefully soon, I just don't know how to do a 60K.

I may, may be able to help you around early August as you suggested. It would require a trip to the east side though. Hey, maybe I could give you a combo deal for 60k & a buff job

Thanks. Like I said, right now I am just getting ideas, but early august looks to be the best time right now. Oh, and, my hood is primered now . But you can still buff the rest of the car, if you want. I am willing to drive pretty much anywhere in MI, too. I like driving. Just not sure how far my SHO will want to drive in it's current state . I may have to switch out those gaskets before then anyway, though. We'll see. Oh, if anybody wants to do rod bearings too, that'd be cool .

Matt, the way I see it, Alex is due for another 60K in about 15K miles... And if he didn't find the envelope of shims, they're behind the drivers' seat in the pocket I think... Pretend you're getting something from the backseat or something...

I still wish he'd change the rod bearings too, since I can't guarantee that that guy did them. I'd hate to see something happen for $30 bucks.

My advice- we can point, but y'all are wrenching- might as well get into it now... Why don't you all take your cars camping and just fix them there- Chris wants to go tenting with Tim anyway!

Perhaps we need to set up a SHO wrenching meet soon?
I know I should have a clutch swap coming up and need to rebuild my rear brakes, with a rod bearing job and couple 60k's in the area too it could make for a good learning experience. Only hang up I see is finding someone with a garage/equipment to do it all at.

This type of thing sound good to anyone?

The only problem with a wrenching meet is that you typically have a lot of distraction and projects that should take a few hours take all day, and they don't always get the attention they deserve. At least that's the way it is with me, and for the disassembly involved in a top 60k I prefer to stay focused because it's VERY easy to strip or cross-thread a bolt in an aluminum head.

However, if you westsiders want to get a tech meet rolling I could see about coming out as a 60k consultant

And the camping trip is for getting AWAY from this stuff for awhile

Well, if a tech meet is what's gonna happen, then I am totally up for that, as long as it is not the week(s) that I am gone camping, cause I'll be in the U.P., pretty much as far north as you can get. But I'd definitely like to learn how to do it, and don't mind doing all of the work, just need some help with it. But, yeah, I'm up for a tech meet - the sooner the better.

BTW, I'll be gone August 5 thru 16, and I have the rest of that last weekend off (thru the 19th or 20th) so that weekend would definetely work. I'd rather do it sooner than that, but don't know what my schedule is for then (I need about 2 weeks notice to get off work), and I don't know what all your guys' schedules are, obviously. So, if we get a meet scheduled, just PLEASE don't make it while I'm gone; that wouldn't serve me much of a purpose .

Just understand that top 60k work and rod bearings are a LOT to do for one day, and if I'm the only one there with experience it's going to get me all willy-nilly. And actually, I only did rod bearings once, and Jim & Chris (SHOracer and Speedy) did most of that job.

Tell you what, I'm down for 60k if someone else can handle the rod bearings. I'm also familiar with things like suspension & brake work.

As for date... it looks like I'll be moving early this month, and with the GLSS camping trip coming up mid August I wouldn't have any time at all until Labor Day weekend. Want to set this meet up for then?

That date should work for me, I'll just work on getting the smoking problem fixed before then, so I can actually drive my car without worrying about it. It seema to have calmed down, but that's really the biggest problem for me right now. As long as that date works for everyone else, all we need to find out is where we will be doing this.

On a side note, does anyone happen to know that if I order the gaskets from SHObros, will they not be shipped out till after Sep. 1st, or will they just be delayed? Just wondering...

They will at LEAST be delayed until after the convention, and may take a while because of the move etc.
I would try RCM Automotive you are more apt to get them sooner, maybe cheeper IDK.
Although I'm not sure if he (Russ I believe it is) will be at the convention or not.

the valve cover gaskets and upper intake gaskets you can get from www.rockauto.com also the ac delco wire sets are under 40 bucks from them and i get the parts in under 3 days ...

my '91 will be arriving up here in the glove within the next week or so.. it will also be in dire need of a front and upper 60k... also needs a spindle replaced... I'll have to give one of you smart ppl some cash monies to get that all taken care of for me
