Disassembly of the transmission was going well and according to the manual and video until now. I lifted the main gear assembly without trouble and the bearings look good. I lifted the 5th gear assembly out the same way and without trouble except the lower bearing which resides with the funnel was in pieces on the bottom. The inner part of the bearing is on the shaft, but the cage and cylindrical bearings were separated and scattered over the funnel. The bearings are in terrible shape too unlike the other bearings.

What do I do now? Where can I find this bearing and have it installed on the shaft? Please help soon. Everything was going so well too. frown

It's a good thing I'm doing this service. With the bad bearing, the pinion gear was starting to wear into the aluminum case. There is a shallow circular groove.

While you are trying to locate the bottom bearing you should call around for shops that will press the bearing on the shaft for you, as it's a press fit bearing.

The 5th gear shaft bearings cross to a Timken Set 16, or use these bearing interchange numbers: LM12711 for the outer race and LM12749 for the cone/roller-assembly. Check with any decent bearing supply.

Thanks guys. I called a bunch of transmission shops but was quickly reminded of why I decided to do this service myself. I'll check out some local bearing places on Monday.

If I remember correctly, only the input shaft bearings are press fit. The main shaft and fifth gear shaft bearings are slip fit. it is a good thing you took the transaxle apart when you did.

5th gear is slip fit on top and press fit by the pinion gear, the one that fell apart.

Drivetrain had the bearing. They removed the old one and installed the new one. They are the only shop in town I talked to which is both knowledgable and competent. They are nice people too. Thanks for the info. BTW they also have the full tranny rebuid kit, synchros and all.

New question: All of the bearing cups spin which I assume is normal. Some can be removed with little effort and some won't budge. The cup for the bad bearing I replaced doesn't spin as freely as the others, nor can it be removed even by prying. It shows no signs of damage otherwise. It is smooth all the way around where the bearing sits. It also seems to be seated evenly. This cup has a black plastic shim(?) under it which may be the cause for the inconsistent spin.

Any thoughts on this will be appreciated before I reassemble the case.

Thanks,
Tom

My 5th gear bearing cup was also a little tricky getting out last time I had the tranny apart. Definitely don't pry it to get it out, at that rate it won't come out. Use to picks on opposite sides and pull it out evenly, that's probably the only way it's going to start coming out. Once it's part way out you might have some luck prying it out, alternating different sides to pry on. There shouldn't be anything under the bearing cup except for the lubrication funnel. The only shim for the 5th gear shaft is on the top of the upper bearing. A previous shop may have put that other "shim" under there to make proper shim height for the 5th gear shaft. Perhaps due to the bad lower bearing?

I got the old cup out. It was VERY tight. The new cup is loose; go figure, same part number too. It seems okay though. Thanks. New question coming in new post...
