So, since I bought my car at 37,000 miles there has always been a slight clunk/**** when changing forward to backward direction. This would get amplified with turning.
This was never all that bad until late last year when it started getting more noticeable. I brought it to the dealership and they installed the shim on the front half shafts according to the tsb.
Although this didn't fix the problem I left it alone until my odometer turned 57,000 the other day and with only 3,000 left I took it in for a serious look.
After them searching for 2 days they called me and said that they pulled some PTU fluid out and found a heavy amount of metal shavings in it. (They replaced the fluid in Dec of 2015)
So they are overnighting a new unit and will have it in tomorrow!
Not great news that the PTU may have been damaged, but a new one at that mileage is going to be a nice piece of mind.
Now I can take care of the FREQUENT fluid changes myself and not have 37,000 miles of unknown history.

Good thing it's still under warranty :thumb: Be sure to ask them what warranty coverage the new unit will have, if any, beyond the remaining PTW.

Would it clunk right away or do it when you are backing up a little? Mine clunks when I back up in reverse and also in neutral when I coast back. I had ford look into the issue last year and reset my transmission and worked alright for awhile but it is back to doing it again

So.....
I left for vacation right after getting the car back with the new PTU.
Now that I'm back the car still has the exact same symptoms as before, so it's back to the dealer.
This time I had the driveline tech ride with me and he thinks it's the rear diff. ( which I mentioned the first two times I brought it in!)
So new PTU last week, I shall await the news yet again... New rear diff? ;)

UPDATE!!!
Ford is currently building me a new RDU!

They don't pull it apart so I won't know what exact part was causing the problem, they only do a full replacement.
The dealer should have it in about 10 days and install is 1-2. (With a loaner car)
Although I will not be complaining because I got a new PTU and RDU at 60,000 miles:biggrin:

Power Transfer Unit... Essentially it's a transfer case, sends power to the rear differential.
The factory power train warranty is 5 year/60,000 miles.

damn ford with their terms . A transfer case would have been fine for them to call it . Thank you for the clarification . I bet its some big money to have to replace it on your own . And the rear diff can be cheap either .

I didn't hear any prices.. But you would DEFINITELY be correct!
I would probably have a minor stroke at the bill replacing both of those together.

The day has finally arrived!
My car is at the dealer today for the new RDU install.
It was supposed to be in almost 2 weeks ago so I've been driving my car on the stock tune for what feels like forever!:mecry:

The day before I removed the tune I did some data logging and ordered a 170 thermostat. Needless to say I've been staring at the thermostat box and my tuner with a fresh custom tune for too long!!!

I am daily more excited than a small child on Christmas...
