Talked to a mechanic who said my horrible bog problem is due to spark problem, no plugs, nothin, if any runs just a bit better, he said i most defintely have to replace the wires. He said he has to pull the whole big ass yamaha intake off, he said 400 dollars? is that normal? do you all pay 400 dollars just for that aspect of a tune up? is he wrong, do i really have to pull the intake? if not, it'd be great if you all could give me some hints to make it easier, im gonna buy wires tommarow so. any help is appreciated

i've never done it with the intake on, but I think it can be done. Besides the intake is incredibly easy to remove, its not worth paying 400 to remove it. best bet is to do it yourself.

No, it's not that hard, just don't have huge hands. I hope that price included the wires. Last time I bought wires, they were $225.

You can get ACDelco wires for about $40. They are identical to OEM.

The only gaskets you will be encountering when removing the intake are REUSEABLE. So no new gaskets are required.

Removing the intake isnt all that hard. The last time I replaced the plugs and wires on my daily driver, it took all of maybe 40 minutes, start to finish.

Remove intake
remove wires
remove spark plugs
install new plugs (dont forget to gap and apply anti-seize)
install new wires (make certain firing order is correct, and use dielectric grease in connectors)
Reinstall intake

In other words, $400 is WAY overboard.

Most people with zero mechanical experience can handle a plugs and wires job. Just as long as you have access the the needed tools, a little patience, and can read a manual.

The intake gaskets should be reusable, but if they chip off, you should be replacing them. Why not replace your valve cover gaskets while you're in there, if there is any oil in the plug wells... (If the $ can be spent) The wires can be changed with the intake on, but for as long as it takes to pull the intake off, it really isn't worth the hassle, the cuts, or the bruises you'll get.

Use the great SHO Phoenix Project site so often linked, and dive in. :thumb:

I do mine without removing the tinake...although I do break all the bolts loose to tilt the intake a bit to gain clearance. Got it down to a 30 minute job to do plugs and wires.

Also, the other day I had a few plugs foul out, didn't know how it happened but when I put new plugs and my 2000 mile old plug wires back on, still had a horrbile idle. Changed coil pack (had an extra laying around...), nothing, still bad idle. Next was the DIS module(extra one laying around...) whammy! That was it. Moral of the story is your problem could possibly be from something other than wires.

Oh, and stay away from that mechanic...he's trying to take you for a ride.

yeah some mechanics are funny that way . it should never cost mare than $120 an hour labor and even that is most expensive , dealer usually.taking off intake changing plugs & wires and reinstall less than 1 hour . never look back when it comes to that mechanic !!!!!!!

IMHO a mechanic who wants way more than market rate to do a job on a SHO is a mechanic who doesn't really want to be working on the car at all. That's a clear sign to run, not walk away from that guy unless you like paying more to get less.

I agree....my guess is that he has never done the job before, doesn't want to mess with figuring out the Yamaha, so to save face, he is pricing himself out of the job on purpose rather than just saying he doesn't want to do it.

Find somebody who wants the job and will do it at a fair price....or better yet, DIY!! :thumb:

+2. There are plenty of sites that have step-by-step instructions with pictures on how to do this. Its not a bad job to do, and it will save you lots of money and give you practice to take the intake off so you can do other maintanence later!

Definitely do it yourself. You will learn more about your car and you will save a ton of money. I have removed so many I can have the intake off in 15 minutes.

If a couple hours can be taken out of your day I would suggest spending spending the $60 for a new manifold gasket set and some cleaner and clean that manifold. If you plan on working on the car yourself in the long run, you might as well start somewhere. If your a newby to working on cars I say go ahead and do it, its not that hard. Take your time, if your nervous, take pictures or notes, put bolts/nuts in bags. If it is a higher mileage car, which it most likely is you can benefit fom a good cleaning. I can almost guarantee that the manifold has never been cleaned unless you bought it from an enthusiast. My $.02

From experience, if you look at the gunk on the inside of the intake and start feeling rowdy, do not disassemble it.

That is unless you want to be thorough and learn a lot in the process, but I digress from the topic...

You can do this yourself. Check out the faq on the shotimes.com website for old how-to articles. I wouldn't pay someone to do this. It might look intimidating but it's very simple. Just a little cramped. I'm no mechanic but if you have to pay someone to change the plug wires you are in big trouble with this car.
