Hello sho experts! I just recently towed my 3.2 liter engine home and I want to put it on my engine stand. What size bolts do I need to attach the mounting plate to the engine? Also is there anything I need to know about putting an engine on a stand as this is my first time putting an engine on a stand? Thanks!

I don't have access to my subframe bolts as they keep the subframe attached to my car (lol), do you happen to know the size? Also do I need high strength bolts?

I don't know the diameter, thread pitch or length that you need offhand, but you do not need anything beyond any old hardware store grade 2 or 3. I will go out to mymetric bolt bin and see what size fits in those top 4 holes ( the bottom two are not threaded and you can use 1/2" NC bolts.

Before you go to the hardware store, loosen up the fingers on the mounting plate of the stand (removed from the stand of course) and while holding it against the engine block, measure the depth of the bolt hole in the block, plus the spacer bushing of the finger, for one of two of the top bolts. All four block holes have the same depth. This will tell you what length bolts to buy.

I'll be right back.

Okay, I'm back. They are M12 with a pitch of 1.75 and the factory length is 65mm about 2.5". If the spacer bushing on your mounting plate finger is about the usual length, you will need a 3.5" bolt. That is why it's important to put one of the fingers against the block to get a rough idea of the length you will need. If your plate doesn't have standoff bushings on its fingers, you will need to use big 5/8" nuts as spacers to keep the plates fingers away from the crank and rear main seal cover plate.

National Coarse thread. In American style they have two basic threads NC and NF (sometimes called UNC and UNF) where NF is the fine thread. Usually the NF bolts are in the higher grades of Grade 5 and 8.

BTW, attach the plate to the engine first, then lift the engine/plate combo up to the pocket of the engine stand.

I also use subframe bolts but I have to shim 2 of them or it hits the rear main seal cover.

For spacers/shims I used about an inch of small pipe which is like putting about 10 big washers.

I went out and bought the bolts, and they fit like a glove, I used a 4" NC 1/2" diameter bolt on the bottom with a nut (for future reference).
