Ok this only happens every once in awhile and only when the car is cold. It will grind into 2nd gear, and its not me either. It only does it for like the first 4 or 5 shifts then it goes away. I have no idea whast up with that, is it the synchro going?

This topic has been addressed numerous times in the past. Typically when the weather turns colder. (imagine that!)

I'm not aware anyone has been able to identify a lone source of this problem. I experienced this for several years. Just recently I installed a new clutch, tob, blocking rings and the grinding has mostly disappeared. Notice the use of mostly. It's nowhere near as noticeable as it was prior to the replacement. However, on the really cold days I can still feel a slight "grind" while shifting into 2nd while everything is still cold.

FWIW, in the last thread on this subject, several Mustang owners mentioned this is a common problem they experience as well.

most of the time if it happens in warm weather too its the 1-2 blocking ring. I wouldnt worry unless it grinds when its warm. ATF does not lubricate as well at lower temps; imagine that :)

I'm running Mobil1 after the change in blocking rings. I changed fluid prior to the clutch replacement but used Type F in my 89 tranny. Didn't notice any difference.

In my case, I had so many replacement parts that could have impacted the 2nd gear grind I'm not sure what item made the issue go away.

It's still there but only slightly on the extremely cold days.

You have to remove and open up the tranny, they sit between the synchros and gears. I did my blocking rings last summer and so far this winter there hasn't been any grinding...although it sure felt like it wanted to when really cold. Last winter it would grind like yours, first 3 shifts so I would skip 2nd until the gearbox warmed up.

what are blocking rings? are they hard to replace?
As stated above, you have to remove the tranny and disassemble it. Here's what they look like when installed.

Just as a side note, if your 3rd gear looks like that one then I would highly suggest getting it replaced as well. :)

Yeah, I did the 1 - 3 shift as well. Luckily there's a hill I go down once I pull out of the subdivision. Don't need 2nd gear anyway!

Glad to report that my third gear was in much better shape than the one shown above! :D

I guess I'll skip 2nd gear when i shift then. I don't really have the resources or the skill to take out the tranny and poke around inside.
