Yeah, my '92 with 178K and a fresh 60K averaged just over 30mpg for the 1600-mile trip between Boston and Miami (and back a few weeks later). That was on 87 octane and averaging 75mph or so.

While your gas mileage isn't bad, it could be better. But, the maintenance costs to raise the fuel economy might exceed the savings. If your car is running relatively well, 24mpg highway might be worth living with until you have to do the maintenance.

while we're (sort of) on the topic, how accurate is the gas gage on the SHO? When I fill up before one of my trips to PA, the pin goes from slighty above full down to about 7/8ths of a tank. Then another time,i had about half a tank left when I started, and the gas light came on halfway through the trip. The odomoter tells the same story either way, but the gage seems tremendously inaccurate. anybody else expereince the same?

Yes, the gauges are very inaccurate. Most people see a slow progression from full to the half-way mark, and then a much quicker drop to empty. I've removed the low fuel bulb on every SHO I've ever owned, since I can usually reliably get 150+ miles after the light has come on, and even then there's still at least a gallon left in the tank when I fill up.

24 mpg is almost exactly what I got yesterday when I drove to Santa Barbara from Glendale, CA. Granted that was partially stop and go traffic, but I wasn't impressed.

My car runs great and has 154k miles on the ticker. I'm gonna change the clutch and bearings very soon.

My car burned 14.77 gallons to go between Buffalo and Baltimore (390 miles). I spent a lot of time above 80, there was some stop-and-go, and I really worked it through the mountains. With the cc set, the car is capable of 30+mpg.

I am rather curious to know what I should expect with a 93 ATX. It has around 130k and unsure if it had the 60k tune up seeings that I just purchased it not too long ago. I had replaced plugs, wires, and o2s. So far it seems as if I am averaging around 280-300 per tank. It seems to calculate around 21 or so. This is all around driving though. One thing I noticed is around 55 it runs approx 2300 in OD. Is this what all ATX trannys run at? It seems rather high.

Does cleaning out the intake manifold have any benefit? I didn't have time to clean out the carbon build up when I did the "top" maintenance last. In theory, could such build up cause the secondaries to stick open ever so slightly degrading mileage? Vehicle runs great other than that. I get about 25 on the highway on average at 76 mph w/ 3/2 atx running at bout 2750 rpm. thanks all. Have a great new year!

MPG is related closely with maintenance. The things to check to increase MPG are:
ECT (2 wire connector) (Wells PN SU201)
O2 Sensors
Clean your MAF filaments
Fuel pressure
Fuel filter
Plugs
Wires
Oil (lower viscosity can increase mileage)
