I have a used 35,500 mile Cpo SHO with PP. Had car 3 days 160 miles when , windshield wiper motor quit, p0456-purge valve code came, stalling and a whine from back seat area. Took to local dealer. Had two waiting on part, told me it was a PTU, but it's a full rear axle assemble with new axles etc. At first I was happy to get car back. Windows open 70 degrees cruising along hearing that highway sound......next few days I thought I heard a whine again, but not everytime. I convinced myself it was nothing. I don't want to lose my car again. But today I could duplicate it everytime. Close windows, close moonroof, radio and AC off, wa la....instant whine in drivetrain, from 5 mph up you can hear it. It stays at same rpm sound even as speed progresses, it just gets louder. I have 3:16, does everyone's car make that drivetrain whine when everything all closed up and off? My 95 SHO didnt...is it just the AWD and it's normal? Only hear it under those conditions. Even if only moonroof open can't hear it any longer. I just want to make sure before I do anything to the car, it is bone stock now.

Funny, my 2013 w/PP started making what seems to be the same noise about 3 months before the lease would have ended this past November. It was at just around 32K miles or so. Wound up not being able to get a new 2016 until February, so kept it a few months extra. Kept hoping it wouldn't blow up before I gave it back

I never figured out what it was, but like yours, the pitch of the whine doesn't change with road speed. It might get louder or softer, but the frequency of the whine never changed. And it would happen when slightly on the go-pedal, but it would also come and go at other times.

I suspect it's the fuel pump. It's probably the only thing that would whine like that and not change pitch. I had the "fuel delivery module" recall done about 8-9 months before I heard that whine. Wonder if yours already had (or even needed) the recall done? Your dealer can run the OASIS report and see.

The key here is, you went to the dealer and complained about a noise - they did a pile of work (if I read that correctly) - it hasn't gone away. Go back and say "try again" unless it's on YOUR dime :)

Slight update, called local dealer, explained situation, have appt Tuesday morning. While driving early this am, I noticed I did not hardly hear the whine and thought I was crazy. But once car heated up and was driving for 20 minutes the whine became very distinctive again. Perhaps once the **** thins out it whines? I will make sure I take them on test drive or they do it after driven....

Might be fuel pump whine. Happens on other Ford models, and the dealer will tell you it is "normal". Doesn't happen all the time, but most annoying when it does. A shutdown and restart usually puts a stop to it.

Update, Ford changed complete rear assembly. Still has a different whine, would not cage out PTU fluid or trans fluid unless I paid for it. Set everyone hears the whine, but does not do it if car off the ground, could be Chinese tires, which are all seasons not the spec summer tires for a PP 013 car. Wanted to charge me for further diagnosis. I said button it up I bring back when it breaks. Put 4000 trip miles in it, sounds like PTU, I unable to change on jacks, so have to crazy amount for mechanic with lift to do it.
