I recently bought a 2011 SHO and I have noticed that when getting off the highway on to a short off ramp, there is alot of roaring noise. Normal braking there is not an issue but it is have to get on the brakes hard, the roaring is insane. The rotors have been turned. Any ideas?

Usually a roaring noise will be caused by a bad wheel hub/bearing. Known to go bad (on the front, esp right one) on these cars. Is the noise worse when turning the wheel left vs right?

I haven't noticed the roaring noise while turning. The mechanic from Ford told me over the phone that it could be tires but I just don't see how it could be.

Tires can also make the sound. It may be normal for the particular tire you have on your car, or it may be a real issue with the tire. What tires do you have on your SHO and how much tread remaining? Do only particular sections of road set off the roaring sound, are you next to jersey walls or buildings at that time? If the roar is only coming from the front, try rotating the tires to see if it makes any difference. Tire cupping can create that noise.

When looking for a quiet tire, I try to avoid tires that have large tread blocks with spacing far apart. This pattern, which is commonly seen in aggressive all-terrain and off-road truck tires, offers a huge amount of biting edges. It also tends to produce a roar as the tire travels along the road surface.

Is this only during harder braking?
Does it start right when the pedal is pushed or after the brakes have been grabbing for a few seconds???

They are Goodyear RS-A with 40-50% tread.

Have you checked tire pressures? Maybe slightly higher pressures will help decrease the contact patch enough/stiffen the tire enough to decrease the noise.

Tirerack.com reviews on the Taurus seem to indicate owners are most satisified if their driving style is "Average" rather than "Spirited".

I have a 2013, and my brakes had 50,000 miles when that same exact thing started happening to me...
its very irritating! I bought a set of front brake pads and rotors from autoanything.com
I went with powerstop's Z32 front kit. It's not the most aggressive performance but for the money it's much better than stock and I'm yet to hear that annoying roar even with hard stops from the 100+ region!

Were the old pads glazed/shiny when you took them off, 13blacksho? BTW, new kit looks :thumb:

My 27,000 mile MKS was making horrendous braking noises once they were hot. The pads and rotors looked new. My best guess is that the previous owner somehow glazed the pads. Dealership turned the rotors, but it did absolutely zero to solve the noise issue.

New front pads and rotors and all noise gone.

The OEM rotors and pads did the same on mine at around 40k miles. I lived with it until 55k and replaced both pads and rotors with Centric.

Mine sounds the same... I have power stop rotors and pads... Sounds like a diesel air braking lol!

I think there is a TSB for excessive noise under heavy braking for the 1O-12 MY... I want to say the solution is a different shim on the pads...

Most people just end up switching out the rotors and pads to an aftermarket setup and it goes away...

I have a pre 2013 with the wittle baby brakes. Converted them to the larger 2013+ brakes. Amazing difference. And no ceramics! Semi metallic pads have a higher friction to heat coefficient. More brake friction with less brake pressure and heat than ceramics. I do believe that ceramic pads are the cause of alot of warped rotors.

I agree! I think the ceramics are also the cause of the noise when they get enough miles on them as they glaze over instead of giving up the material. Hence the low dust.

From what I've read about ceramic pads they are not actually "low dust" but the dust is lighter in color, giving the perception of less dust. Based on my experience washing my cars frequently and having used ceramic pads, I'm on board with this. There definitely is still a lot of dust that gets washed off the wheels, but I don't notice how dirty the wheels are until I see them clean.

I'm amazed with some people getting 50,000 miles on stock pads and rotors. I just replaced my '15 SHO PP front brake rotors and pads at 10k miles. The pads were about 1/2 gone, and the rotors were overheated with surface cracking, slight warping, with the top edge of the rotors with a small lip from wearing down of the rotor surface.
