Hi everyone,

Well, I was following another thread regarding the missing sub amp and did some investigation on my side. The amp is no longer used and does go directly now to the main amp. Actually makes more sense from a cost and weight stand-point. Anyway, I don't particularly like the 6x9 subs and the amp is a decent one and I was thinking of using (2) 6.5" or 8" Bazooka DVC 4 ohm wired across both coils. The current sub is 2.3 ohm each and I don't want to over drive the amplifier by a missed matched impedance. I would try to use one sub for both channels, but I don't think the amp would like to be bridged. Both tubes will be passive (no amp). Any one do something similar, and how do you like it?

Thanks in advance!

If the current speakers are 2.3 ohms and you are putting in 4 ohm speakers you would be underdriving not overdriving the amp.....you likely wouldn't get enough power that way. A higher impedence speaker will likely produce lower volume and probably wouldn't provide sound in the same volume levels as the rest of the speakers. You are probably better off adding a "real" amp and putting in the subs of your choice, whether it be a free air replacement or some sort of box in the trunk. Problem with the box design is you would lose at least some of your trunk/pass through capabilities. (You could wire two speakers/side in parallel and get 2 ohms per channel which would be a slight overdrive....but I'd think that baby might get hot and might not like that setup long term)

Hence the reason for the dual voice coil speakers (will wire each sub in parallel to make 2 ohm from 4 ohm). 2.3 ohm is what is stated on the back of the speaker itself. I measured more or less 2.2 - 2.1 ohm. So my impedance match will be perfect then on each channel and the amp will not have to work harder.

I want to basically keep the sony setup in tact but improve the bass output and this way seems to be the easiest. I am going to install two 6.5" bazooka tubes each wired down to 2 ohms for each channel and then wire direct replacing the 6x9's which I'll just leave hanging there.

Thanks for the feedback!

What worries me is the tiny power supply wires to that amp. It may be sufficient....but I would always be wondering.

If you try it out....let us know your results.....I'd be interested in seeing how it turns out.

I have to admit that the stock Sony system is dissappointing....I was thinking about doing something myself, but as I get older, I don't want to see anything in the trunk, so I'd have to do some free air deal and would likely juice up both amps (mines a 2010)......Or I could do nothing and live with it :)

I ended up using an amp and kept the Sony system in tact.

i'm really glad you figured out the 2011 wiring, anyways i'll say it like it should be said this is not to flame your setup just constructive criticism from a former SPL guy... you should definately relocate the subs and amp, kinda defeats the purpose of having a massive trunk for 2 bazookas and a small kenwood amp to be in the way like that. a 10" sub will give you more trunk space and better sound quality over 2 bazookas any day

Hamrtyme:

Thanks for the feedback! (2) 6.5" Bazooka Tubes / 1000 W Kenwood wired at 2 Ohms.

Unknown_Driver:

Well the claim is that one of the Bazooka tubes is equivlant to a 10" ported. Jury is still out on that one as I am still tuning the Amp to where I want it (Kenwood KAC-7205 / 1000 W). However, the bass is incredible now and much better then the (2) 6x9's in the rear deck. I was looking for a simple solution to the bass problem that exists in the Sony system (my opinion). This car will probably never see much more then my wifes purse. I have my 04 Explorer as the 'pack mule' now to carry everything or my wife can drive her company car.:)

There's also a JL Audio Stealthbox for our cars that you could check out. It's a 13.5-inch Thin-Line Subwoofer in a super-slim enclosure that installs under the spare tire. I was thinking about buying it whenever I got around to doing some stuff to the SHO.

There is a guy "Lanson" on Flex Net Forum that is doing big things with the Sony system...
Has made a mold of the tire well and installed many $$$$ of improvements. This may fit the SHO... Anyway... his thread(s) may answer some of your questions and give you new ideas.
