I did a search but was unable to locate anything that I noticed directly correlated to the issue I am seeing...

A brief history. I bought this car used less than 2yrs ago. It came with one key FOB only and no card with the master code for the door keypad. No biggie. I never used it on my Escape, I have no intentions of using it on this car.

Fast forward to now. I walked out to my car Sat am and as I near it, it unlocks on it on. OK I know I disabled the autolock/unlock feature let me check just in case. Autolock was still off, but auto unlock was active. Weird, so I disabled it and went to the store. I hit lock and go into the grocery store. Coming out of store and walking to my car the same thing repeats itself. As I get near it auto unlocks. Weird I though, but I drove home and went inside not thinking twice about it.

Sunday the wife and I go out. We take the Escape. As we walk by the SHO it unlocks again. I grumble and lock it with the FOB as we pull away. When we return 4hrs later I notice the outside Keypad on the door is lit up well before we pull into the driveway. It is dark and that is a bright red color. It is hard to miss! It starts flashing and goes solid, flashing and then solid. I get out of the Escape and the SHO unlocks. I press lock on the FOB as we walk into the house still grumbling.

This am it does the usual unlock as I near it. I take out my key, press lock on the FOB out of spite, and not even 2 seconds later the car unlocks itself again. I get in and go to work. I am about half a mile from the house and the car tried to lock the doors. I leave work and the usual unlocking as I near my car occurs. I start the drive home and the car locks the doors again as I am leaving work. I check again during the ride home and everything is OFF as far as auto unlock and auto lock go on the settings. At a stop sign I notice the door panel is lit up red and flashing. I get home, close the car door, press lock on the FOB, and before I can get 2 step away the car has unlocked itself and is trying to continuously do so VERY rapidly. I heard at least 4-5 clicks in less than 2 seconds. I walk away a few feet and hit lock on the FOB and it locks w/o unlocking. I wait 30 mins and leave my key inside. As I walk around to the drivers side my door key pad is lit up red. The car is locked though. I go back in and get my FOB. I walk out and as I near the car it unlocks again. I press lock on the FOB and it locks and then unlocks itself seconds later. Again I hear it trying to unlock the car very rapidly a few seconds later even though it is unlocked.

Any clue what could be going on with this? I have went through the lock/security section of the manual, but nothing seems to line up to what I am encountering (at least to me it doesnt!) I dont keep really anything valuable in the car outside of car seats for the kids, but I dont like the idea of it unlocking on its own especially after I try and lock it!

Start with checking the car and fob batteries. Car batteries are prone to going kaput after 3 years or less, need to check CCAs, not just voltage. Fob batteries, same deal. could be other reasons, but these are the most common.

Thanks for the reply.

The battery is fairly new. I would say it is less than a year old. It died on me about 8 months after buying the car so it was replaced at that point in time. I will swap out the FOB battery today and see if that helps! Ill check the Voltage on the battery as well just to be safe. Knowing my luck with batteries, it very well could be an issue :smash:

Just checked voltage, it is a brisk 37 degree am :).

12.4V cold
dropped to 11.2V on crank
sat at 14.4ishV while running

seems normal. what were the CCAs vs the battery rating?

The details on the battery...
  • Group Size (BCI): 65
  • Cold Cranking Amps (CCA): 750 CCA
  • Cranking Amps (CA): 925 CA
  • Reserve Capacity (min): 140 Minute
  • Voltage (V): 12 Volts
So the battery seems solid, and I just put a new battery in the FOB this am. It is still doing the same thing along with a new development today! Every 5-10 mins or so while driving it will now lock my doors. It does this regardless if the door are locked already or not. If they are locked it still acts like I hit the button on the FOB to lock it. I have taken it out of my pocket to make sure nothing is hitting the FOB accidentally and it still does the same thing.

This is getting annoying. I hate electrical issues lol.

I also found the master code on the sticker by the break pedal. If I lock the doors from the outside with the FOB the car then unlocks it. I lock it again and it stays locked. From here I can use the master code to unlock the car on the door panel keyless entry, but I can not lock it from the door panel. I have to use the FOB again to lock it, which the car then promptly unlocks. The FOB lock button has to be pressed again to lock the car. All Auto Lock and Auto Unlock functions are disabled and staying disabled via the setup function.

I will check into the fuses today or tonight if I have time. I need to find a diagram to show what goes where and my manual is at the house while I here at work naturally!

Whenever I wash my car with the key fob in my pocket, it'll lock/unlock when I hit the door handle with the water. What I suspect is happening in your case is, the electronics in the door handle think a human is touching it, and unlocking as you get near it with the key fob. Were the door handles wet? And I mean either driver's or passenger side.

No it has been fairly dry these last few days. A few snow flurries but nothing crazy. Bad owner comment here (I haven't washed it in about a month!)

There has been a small crack on the driver side key pad panel since I bought it and it has never been an issue. Just for some reason the last 4 days it is staying "on." It is lit red or flashing pretty much every time I see it. I hope it isnt staying on 24/7, but it may be. Can pulling a fuse "disable" this feature, or will it hinder something else. The way these things are wired these days it is probably tied to 15 other things with that one fuse...

Great assumption!

Way to "bury the lead". LOL

I think we have a winner! Maybe some water got in there, but either way it is likely shorting out and when you approach the car with the fob, the locks are being activated. Now to find out how to replace the keypad!

Maybe you can pull off the door applique and disconnect the keypad, if you'd rather not replace it.

I think a new keypad should be easy to put in? The "special" parts come in AFTER, IIRC.

Or seal the crack with silicone and see if the problem goes away? Though it would be better to take it off and at least examine it for rust/corrosion as well.

That crack never crossed my mind since it has been there from the dealership. You really cant even get a feel the crack it is so thin/small. Probably at least 25 washes and all of the usual NC storms have never caused an issue, so it didn't jump out at me as a potential reason.

Yeah I have no desire to use it personally, so I will have to dig in and try to find a way to disconnect it.

You say 2011 and you have had it less than 2 years and you live in NC, it wouldn't happen to be black would it?

Just kidding with you. My sister kept at me for months to figure out why her door locks weren't working properly on a Hyundai, for which i have no shop manual. After deciding our best bet was to replace the master switch panel on the driver's door, she casually dropped the line, "It all started after the door hinge broke and I had the body shop replace the hinge. And just after the driver's window started acting up." Which of course has led me to believe that the body shop monkeys affected the wiring from door to body in some fashion. Or the wires have pulled loose from the door dropping down. Glad I did not purchase the master switch panel on Ebay, I told her.

Sometimes, it is all about the details.

The keyless entry keypad will unlock the doors weather a fob is near or not.

You have some gremlins with the passive door handles.

The good news is the handles electrial connction is the same left and right. Although they cannot be transferrd/instaled oppsitet hey can be electrically swaped to test. I have seen one handle affect others or just bad handles. Could be a bad circit too. Never seen a module fix this symptom.

LOL I always just figured my car was haunted, sometimes it unlocks itself on its own an sometimes I get out of the car an it locks itself, I guess it al depends on what kind of mood she is in. LOL So far for me it has not really been a problem I am just very careful to lock an valuable things up in the trunk. So for now because I like having a haunted car I am not going to worry too much but I can see where it could be a big issue.

I've had that happen when there is ice or something else causing pressure inside the door latch. Basically, it thinks the door is open, so it unlocks the door as a curtesy.

It seems to just be the driver side. I can approach the passenger side and nothing. I walk around to the driver side and there she goes! Unlocks right away. When I put my 4yr old in or take him out of his car seat from the rear driver side it goes ballistic. It will try and unlock 8-10 times in a row in very rapid succession. With the holidays and work I havent had time to dig into it yet. Hoping to take the door panel off this weekend and just disconnect the thing...

That was my one issue with a car like this. Love the power out of it, but I personally have very little use for all the bells and whistles. To me they are simply things that can break (case in point!) The rear power shade started freaking on me about half a year ago. It would repeatedly try to go up and get stuck and sound like the gear was striping. Just popped up the rear panel and disconnected that bad boy too! I have enjoyed the seat warmers this winter though lmao!
