If you are driving in the rain or snow then put them in the back. Darn near impossible to recover from a spin in those conditions but bald tires in the back will enable you to go roundy round very easy.
techniclly, they are supposed to go on the back. it is to help with oversteer because most people can recover from understeer easier than oversteer. Now where you actually put them, is your choice. personally unless i was going to get 2 new tires in the near near future id put them on the front.
I just bought 2 new BFG Traction T/A VR's and I'm putting them on the back, and movoing the Conti's out back to the fronts so I can wear 'em down :burn_out: . Then I'll get 2 more BFG's and I'll be matching!
