My 95 ATX SHO has been intermittently been starting up with a slightly rough idle. So I ran the codes. Now I'm confused. During my key on, engine off test, I got a two digit code of 33 ( 3 flashes, pause, 3 flashes, long pause, 1 flash, long pause, 3 flashes , pause, three flashes ) I thought I had three digit codes ? My key on,engine on test gave me a 111. The cylinder test was a 9.

So, what is that 2 digit code doing there ? If it was an older car, it would indicate an EGR not opening, but it's a 95 ( california ) car.

There wasn't a pause between the flashes. I thought there would be a pause between digits.

Assuming that you are correct, and I got 111, or all OK codes, then what would I need to check for the rough idle that sometimes occures on startup ? If it had a chocke, I'd think it was that or a vacumn leak.

There is a pause between all flashes, it's just different lengths to contend with -- just comes with practice. Lets assume that each dash (-) in my little example here is 100ms (not correct, but good enough for this example), so two dashes (--) would be 200ms and so on. The X will represent the flash.

So this is what you got: X---X---X------X---X---X----------X----------X---X---X------X---X---X

Which would translate to 111, pause, 111, long pause, seperator pulse, long pause, 111, pause, 111.

This example would be a 176 memory code: X---X---X------X---X---X----------X----------X---XXXXXXX---XXXXXX------X---XXXXXXXX---XXXXXXX

Do a search under 'idle reset procedure' and that process might help correct your rough idle. Where you have an ATX, it's not unusual for the IAC/IAB and/or EGR nostrils to become clogged with carbon and sometimes cause rough idling. Again, run a search under 'nostrils' for info. on cleaning them.
