The tranny once in gear is controlled electronically. Their is a cable that connects the shifter to the tranny to shift from park to drive ....

Are you have a problem with the tranny?

seems to **** into first, not a violent **** but not a smooth shift. the guy at one tranny shop says its a good thing that it is not slipping. when i had the vss replaced they ran test and the tranny came out ok. does it whether cold or hot. when i accelerate faster it is a smooth shift. the tranny does have "56k" spraypainted on the pan

check trans mounts
I would check the front motor mount also. My neighbor had an ATX with a bad front mm and it felt like it slamed into gear. Much better now.

what's the best way to check the mounts? never done it on a fwd.

Two easy ways:

Crawl under the car and grab ahold of the Y-pipe to give yourself a torque advantage. Move it side to side, up and down, back and forth....you get the idea. You easily be able to see excess movement in either motor mount/trans mount.

Another easy way (since the front mount usually is the culprit) is pop the hood so you can see through the gap between the hood and cowl. Stand on the brake and give her some gas (like a brake torque in a RWD car) and if you have a broken front mount, you will see the front of the motor stand up quite a bit. Since you already have the hood popped, look for a shiny spot on the intake from contact with the hood pad.
