more rubber, more HP.....
Can a 1990-95 hub fit on a 1989 spindle without issues?

I am thinking of converting to the closed bearings on the '90-95 hub.

The '89 has those open bearings that you get to pack with grease.

i already did this conversion to my 89.

you will need:
2 X 90 knuckles
2 X 89 backing plates
2 X89 calipers and brakets
2 X 90 hubs.

as long as all the brake parts are 89 they will work.

or if you have access to it, you can just swap all the 90 stuff over and just reuse the calipers.

but you can't use 89 caliper brackets with 90 backing plates. the offset is defferent

For the F.Y.I department: 90,91,92 rear hubs are the same,,93,94,95 hubs are the same and about 3mm different that the 90-92 ones. Thats just enough to make things rub. The actual spindles from 90 thru 95 are identical, but all the stuff bolted to them changes from 92 to 93.

Something seems not right.
The 89 and 90 calipers and caliper brackets are identical. The 89 backing plate is straight, whereas the 90 has a 3mm offset.
That goes along with the hub surfaces of each hub being a different distance from the spindle, 3mm. But what rotors did you use? Those are different too between 89 and 90-92 by a 3mm offset so if you stayed with the 89 rotors I can see the need for 89 backing plates. If 90+ rotors are used, you must then use the 90+ backing plates too. At least thats the way I remembered it, I'm too lazy to go look rightnow.

that's why i said just using the whole assembly would also work. on my car i'm using 89 rotors, calipers and brackets with 90 spindle, and hub, so i needed the 89 backing plates.

nc98sho, when you converted to the 90+ rear spindles, did you notice a difference in handling?

My '89 with the original open bearings feels imprecise like the rear end is wobbling left-and-right all the time. Every time I tighten the bearings up, the seem to loosen after a week or two. It's not like my '91's which feel nice and tight and precise.

well, i had a problem with the bearing working loose also, but since the swap, i havn't had any problems. between that and the GTP rear controll arms, it's nice and tight back there.
