I was at my local tuning shp today, discussing rims/tires with the guy who does the installs.

He said that they had just finished doning a 1993 SHO mtx, and that 18x8 rims had fit, no problem, no rubbing, no modification needed.

He also said that another guy had 18's put on his car, and the car was REALLY lowered, and still they did not rub, worked fine with no mods whatsoever.

I thought that 17x7.5 was a big as you could go, without rubbing, creating problems?

Plus, there were over 50 different choices of rims that would fit the weird SHO bolt pattern, and they had offsets from around 38mm, 40mm, 42mm, and 45mm! So many choices to choose from, from about a dozen different companies, not just TD and Konig!!

I thought rims were hard to find for these cars?

thanks for some advice! please let me know your experiences with 17's and 18's! And can you run x8, or just x7.5?
Jason.

I think he said the tires they mounted were 225/45/R18, but don't quote me on that, I can't remember exactly.

edien(ri-sho) has had his 18" team dynamics on his car and hasn't posted any problems with rubbing. he has the black 92(?) thats about 2" off the ground and sweet chrome 3A racing mufflers. i don't know anyone else who is running 18s tho. edien was planning on going to 19s but couldn't find anyone to buy his 18s. if you are interested you might want to email or put up an ATTN: for him. he was going to charge 1200, they are team dynamic 18" with pirelli p7000(?) not sure if he still has them, hes not on that much anymore. sweet wheels tho

Hmmm...I have a 1993 SHO dropped 2.50"(front) 1.30"(rear), 18x8 TD Motorsports, and 235/40/18 Pirelli P7000SS

. I couldve told theres always room for more, but I stopped preaching about 18+" rims after 60% of the ppl hea kept telling me they were "satisfied" with there dinky 17's
wink.gif
. And if you are going with 18's dont go below 235mm w/tires(unless the rim is below 7.5" wide) b/c it just looks to tall and not wide enuff IMO.

If you're talking performance, 17x7.5 is probably the biggest you'd want to go, and find the lightest 17's you can. Going to 18's or more is going to increase unsprung weight without giving any real benefit in handling.

If you're talking looks, that's a completely different story.

Same thing can be said about comparing 17's to light/afermarket 16" rims. It all comes down to preference and what the real purpose of the wheels will be.

Well, not exactly.

The limitation with 16" rims is the speedometer calibration. You have to maintain the proper overall wheel/tire height if you don't want to have the speedo out of whack. It's not possible to go to an extremely low profile tire on 16" rims and have this happen, which is why +1 and +2 upgrades exist.

18 x 8.0" rims with 225/40 or 235/40 tires may not be a problem, but I will tell that 17 x 8.0" with 245/45 are at the max for room both at the inside on the rear strut housings and the front brake lines (with the 13" Cobra/PBR brakes) as well as on the rear fender lip.
