Ok so yesterday my brake pedal started going to the floor and also sometimes when im coming to a fast stop my pedal kick's back toword's me so i took it to Brake Master's (Bad Idea) and of course they will name everything that they possibly can so they tell me it need's a Master Cylinder,Abs/Anti skid realy.. All coming to a total of $845.44 so i decided to bleed the brake system after i did it started working better but it did that kicking thing again and then when i was in the drive thru all the sudden a cloud of smoke come's from under the hood smelling like break fluid and then it stop's.. So from what you gu's hear what do i need to fix? i can do the master cylinder if that's the problem but what in the world is a Abs/Anti skid relay? do i really need that? if you guy's think it's something else please feel free to let me know thank you -Matt

Is this on an automatic? I wonder if your pressure switch is leaking. There is a recall for this and it might explain the smoke and loss of pressure.

That sounds pretty f'd up. Maybe you do need a MC. Or maybe a problem with the return spring... IDK, I'm no expert on that part of the brake system.

I hope someone else can help you out better, and soon. That sounds dangerous.

Well it sounds like you have a problem in your ABS unit. I'll have to look in the pub for it's exact operation, but sounds like there is a check valve that isn't working and your feeling the caliper line pressure backing up through the MC when your ABS solenoids and motor actuate.

Certainly need to get that fixed, but know you can still stop if you have to. Just pretend it never had power to begin with and push the pedal to the pavement.

+1 on bad ABS. A bad MC will not, i repeat not, force the pedal back up at you with that amount of force. A bad ABS unit, however, will. It is very possible that the hose going from the MC to the ABS unit ruptured or fell off (the brake fluid line). Check that first. It's about 1/2" wide. Failing that, check the ABS unit very thoroughly for signs of leakage/ruptures. You may have to spring for a new ABS unit. Which is neither cheap nor easy to replace. Sorry :(...

It's fairly common for grease from failed CV boots to be flung into the sensor ring...distorting the ABS signal and making the ABS unpredictable.

For $800+ it's worth looking at the sensors to make sure they are clean and grease free.

None of that explains the smoke, of course...a leak of that magnitude SHOULD be fairly easy to ID.

Wasn't that report hilarious?

:snicker: You gotta wonder - I bet they even got the cardboard they're using from WalMart . . . .

. . . . for free !

Anyway, back to the problem. Matt, do the ABS and BRAKE idiot lights properly during test-out when you start the car? Are the ABS or BRAKE idiot lights coming on when you're getting the pedal feedback?

Oh yea Matt, one more thing. Try starting the car with your foot on the brake, when the ABS cycles through its' self test do you feel a single pulse? If the cause of your problems is your ABS unit, the effect should be more violent than the normal pulse.:oogle:
