My car is a 90. The stock EATC had the usual busted up soft buttons. I purchased a hard button EATC from a member here on the forums, and was told it was functional. I put it in my car. When I went to use it for the first time, I found it didn't quite work. It freaks out and clicks on and off.

I have another 90 parts car. Since I don't have the EATC I took out of my car anymore, I have the one from the parts car. I thought maybe I could swap the hard buttons into the soft button unit. I made a post asking, but got no answers. Today, I decided to see if I could do it. I recently recall seeing a post in another EATC thread about that you have to match the color codes. I notice the hard button unit I was sold says "BLACK" on it. I have no idea what was in my car, because I chucked the stock unit when I put the new one in. However, the unit in my 90 parts car (same year as my car), has a blue dot sticker on it, I am guessing that's a "BLUE" code EATC.

I am not sure what to do at this point. The inside of the face plates of the units look like they'd require some good surgery to swap buttons.

Any help would be appreciated.

you mean hard button as in round from the lincolns?

if its just a square hard button you can just plug it right in but for those round one some modifications are required but i dont know how to do it.

No, I mean the later style EATC, like Gen 2 SHO. The early cars had "soft buttons" that were hollow so the light could shine through them, and they always broke.

The PCB connection to the face added a wire in 1992 or 1993... so a 90 EATC wouldn't support a 95 face, AFAIK. Could be wrong on that, but that's the impression I got.

your right racer x, the 90-92 units have a chip in the face board, therefore have less wires. as you stated they are not compatible with a face swap.

There are hard button EATC's made for the 90-91 SHO as they have a different color display compared to the 92-95. However, they cost $625 through Ford and would have to be ordered. These are very rare to come across and I happen to have a brand new one in the box I've been holding onto but don't have a SHO for. If interested, let me know...I'm not looking anywhere near the Ford price.

If it's a rare part and they have to order, most dealers mark up the price 50-100%.
