Can someone explain to me how to make an extra backup fob for my 2011 taurus sho?

I followed a few different types of directions but none have worked so far. I have 2 working keys and 2 backup blank keys. They are push to start button keys.

Some say to take the keys out of fob before doing so, some don't mention this. I pride myself on not being a complete dummy but I am about to throw in the towel and talk to a locksmith. I don't have a user manual so cannot look it up either. Please help

IMO, if this procedure doesn't work and you are trying to program eBay or Amazon keys, the problem is probably with the key.

From the Service Manual:

Key Programming Using Two Programmed Keys — With Intelligent Access (IA)

NOTE: This procedure works only if 2 or more programmed ignition keys are present. If 2 programmed Intelligent Access (IA) keys are not available, refer to Spare Key Programming — Using Diagnostic Equipment in this section.

NOTE: The Remote Function Actuator (RFA) module PID SPAREKEY must be enabled for this procedure to operate. If this PID is not enabled, refer to Key Programming Switch State Control — With Intelligent Access (IA) in this section. The RFA module PID SPAREKEY is set to ENABLE when the vehicle is built.

NOTE: A maximum of 4 IA keys can be programmed to an IA vehicle. If an attempt to program more than 4 IA keys occur, the additional IA keys cannot operate in any way and the message center displays MAX # OF FOBS LEARNED.

NOTE: If additional keys are to be programmed, and the remaining keys are with the customer, or are not available, instruct the customer to refer to the Owner's Literature for instructions on programming the remaining keys. In this case, the PID SPAREKEY must be enabled. The PID SPAREKEY is set to ENABLE when the vehicle is built.

NOTE: This procedure is not necessary if only the Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) backup transceiver, Remote Functions Receiver (RFR) module or any of the IA antennas was replaced. Replacement of these components do not erase the IA PATS keycodes in the RFA module.

NOTE: All doors must be closed and must remain closed for the duration of this procedure or the programming procedure ends.

NOTE: If the steps are not carried out as outlined, the programming procedure ends. The procedure needs to be repeated.

  1. NOTE: Make sure the ignition is in the OFF mode and that there are 2 programmed IA keys inside the passenger compartment.
Insert an unprogrammed IA key in the backup transceiver slot in the floor console storage compartment with the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) buttons facing out and the key ring facing up.

  1. Press the driver or passenger door lock control switch to the UNLOCK position 3 times.

  1. Press and release the brake pedal one time.

  1. Press the driver or passenger door lock control switch to the LOCK position 3 times.

  1. NOTE: After this step is followed, the indicator on the start/stop button begins to rapidly flash, indicating that programming mode has been entered and that 2 programmed IA keys have been detected in the vehicle.
Press and release the brake pedal one time.

  1. NOTE: If 4 IA keys have already been programmed to the vehicle, no more IA keys can be programmed and the message MAX # OF FOBS LEARNED displays on the message center after completing this step.
Within one minute, press the start/stop button to program the new key. A message displays on the message center indicating the new IA key has been programmed.

  1. Remove the newly programmed IA key from the backup transceiver slot and press the UNLOCK button on the IA key in order to exit the key programming mode.

  1. Verify the operation of the new key by first pressing the LOCK button and then the UNLOCK button on the IA key, then place the new key inside the passenger compartment and start the vehicle with the new key. Make sure the original keys are outside of the vehicle when verifying the new key operation.

  1. If it is desired to program an additional key (only up to 4 keys total can be programmed into the RFA module), repeat Steps 1 - 8 for the additional key that needs to be programmed.

Thank you. I will try this. This doesn't say to remove the actual key from there so I will not do that. I will try this particular key orientation and whatnot when I get car back from getting detailed. Hopefully tomorrow
