Transmission filter fitment issue,97 AX4N

I'm in the process of servicing the trans and the new filter won't fit. It's the proper orange seal filter.The old filter came out without the seal which was stuck in the filter hole,it was a green seal what was left of it. The old filter without the seal fits perfectly. Do you you have to use extra force to install these filters ? Also,there's a steel insert in the filter hole,Is that normal or a field repair ? Thanks in advance for any advice on this situation.

Since the green and orange gaskets are different sizes, you need to get the filter with the same color gasket. It may be there was some repair done to the transmission either over the years or to fix a factory snafu.
The gasket should be a bit snug, but with a small amount of transmission oil on the seal/hole it should want to fit right in and stay.
It is expected after a few cycles of getting up to normal temps the gasket will stick to the walls of the hole to ensure nothing passes by.

Based on my research the filter tube is the same on the plastic filter but the size of the o-ring is different.

Orange: 0.5" thick
Green: 0.42" thick

You definitely could get the orange one to fit with enough push, but the green will not fit in the large transmission side hole.

I tried a green seal filter first because I didn't know there was a sho specific filter and the green seal did the same thing.I'm wondering about the steel insert in the filter hole,if it's supposed to be there.

Well the green is the smallest, if struggling to get that one in, use that one.

Did the old seal come out of the valve body? It a typical for the seal to be stuck. It is steel lined and usually pried out with a screwdriver. Careful not gouge the aluminum bore of the valve body.

That's exactly what mine did,I just wasn't sure if it was supposed to be there or not. The new filter doesn't have a steel liner. Is the liner only on the filter from the factory ? Thanks for the reply,I'll carefully remove the old liner and get the SHO on the road !
