I am considering using the Gen III V8 in a 1948 Ford in a RWD application. Does anyone know of a automatic transmission that would bolt directly to this V8?

I think the bellhousing is same/similar to Duratec 25 motors. So maybe a miata type or ranger might bolt up. Have to reasearch heavily first. Those are the two points I would start. Is it identical or close enough to Duratec and then go from there.

You can shout out to the v8 mailing list and see if they have anything to help. there should be a mailgroup link on the v8sho website or contact ronporter on this forum via the message or 'conversation' function found at the envelope icon top right

Thanks for the quick response. I was thinking that the transmission used in the V8 SHO, the AX4N, is used in the Taurus with the Duratec V6. I thought that if that was the case, the Duratec engine would have been used in some Ford vehicles that were RWD. Unfortunately, doesn't look like that's the case.

It is an iteration of the other ax auto transmissions of the time. I would check and see if the bolt pattern matches the similar contour svt block and if so then maybe a ranger might bolt up.

Also, the minivan aerostar (vulcan motor based) might bolt up. Maybe a slight modification is used.

If the contour block bolt pattern comparison holds then there should be versions of rwd custom conversions out there.

At least a few Ranger based rwd used for v6 SHO motors I think.

Thanks. I'll do some continuing research. I just got to believe I'm not the first person to put the V8 SHO motor in a RWD vehicle. Thanks again.

Maybe Lincoln LS, Jag when it was a ford product, and t-bird models had rwd and fuzzy memory duratec based blocks? Something to look at anyway. Lincoln might even have had a manual transmission option.

Take alot of digging to get a good answer. I remember pjtoledo posting a long time ago that a 2000-2002 Lincoln LS V6 Getgrag transmission may work with the SHO 3.4 V8. Maybe. Prrobably need a good measurement pattern and have to get a good hands on look-see.

Now adapters can be made to make mating up possible to many options. You just have to get creative with putting stuff together.

I found one company, Performance Adapters. They say can mate any transmission to any engine...$1250

I have a CD showing the process of putting a SHO V6 into a sports car with a T5 manual transmission. They used a bell housing from a Ford Van which is nearly a match so maybe the source van also had an optional Automatic. The big downside is it is not the V8 but the older V6. By the way, the CD is up for grabs for the postage cost.
