I've noticed a lot of hood shake at high speeds out of my 2010 SHO/PP I was thinking about adding louvered vents similar to what's installed on my Jaguar XKR. The hood seems to be strong when you push and pull on it while the car is stopped but at anything over 90 mph it looks like it's ready to fly off. Has anybody done any research on why this looks so bad, is it air pressure building up under the hood?

Hmm, I’ve heard of it happening without the splash shield and have experienced it myself with the hood not completely closed, whoops! Outside of that, I don’t know.

Check to make sure you splash guard isn't missing a couple bolts and sagging to funnel air into your engine bay. There was another instance of just this happening and it was because it was on the car just not completely.

I know it's connected now but I have to admit I came back from Texas this winter and hit a tire tread on the highway that knocked it down. It was missing all four screw inserts when I went to fix it. Maybe it had been hanging down for quite some time. I guess I'll have to take it out and run it up to see if it's still buffering the hood with it in place for sure now.

If you were missing 4 screws and its only held on by 4 screws, how was is still there when you went to fix it?

That's a good question. the next day after my trip I'm from Texas I took it to get the oil changed and they noted the pan wss hanging down so they put a couple of cable ties in it to hold it up. When I went to fix it that's when I found all 4 threaded inserts missing and just two of the quarter turn bolts

It the two rear holes had zip ties it will hold. The front has a retaining clip it slides into.

Square that away first. You will need the following. If you are missing all the hardware, you will need 4 of each below.

Also be weary of adding vents to your hood. You are cutting the structural integrity of the hood. That being said, BPD1151 commented that he needed to install hood pins after he added vents to his hood.

Thanks for those links. Mine are lose and I’ve been meaning to look up those inserts but I keep forgetting/have been too lazy. Hahaha.

Hey guys i had the same issue with my car a couple years ago, changed out the hood shocks and it was gone, just worn out shocks that are supporting the hood anymore!

I'm guessing they changed theirs a couple years ago as well. Maybe even before you.

some folks have mounted gopro camera to the carriage and filmed the potential issue.

I have noticed that I am getting hood bulge like this over 115 mph. I have my engine cover and splash guard in place. However, I did cut open my vents on my splash guard. Pretty sure that is causing my issue now.

I have been 150+ mph in my SHO and never noticed. However that was pre-cut vents in my splash guard. So yeah.

weird this post came back when it did, on monday I got into it with an old m3 with an erector set wing, i let him go by but he kept taunting me, passing trucks on the shoulder, doing fly bys. once it was just me and him on the road I caved and ran him, got out front and when it was clear he wasnt catching me i let off, he did a fly by again, let off, and did it AGAIN, so even my wife said lose him so I got back in it and my hood started dancing around 120, looked like the rear was swaying more than anything but I had just checked oil at my last fill up an hour before so i started getting nervous and let out. he passed me again and my hood stopped shaking when i got it back in the doubles. stopped at the next rest stop and hood was close completely and it hasnt done it again since, my splash guard is there but well weathered (stripped 1/4 turns, no threaded bolts, front clip is snapped off) never really thought that could be the problem

The description of the wing made me laugh.

How incredibly perfect!!!

If not for the wing I probably wouldn't have bothered, I've seen what people can do with those early 00s M3s and some of them would dust the SHO but the wing was taller than the roof line and too narrow, like he stole it off a civic. Would've been funny if it was an anti-sleeper sleeper, looks stupid but is actually fast, but I think it was stock other than the Sawzall exhaust and Wright Brothers performance package screwed to the trunk lid
