My SHO has been my daily for 3 years now. I'm running 1 degree cooler plugs, 170 degree stat, 93 octane tune, CAI, 3 bar MAP, and a catch can. I do all of my own maintenance.

I have my Livewire TS set up to alert certain min / maxes. This past Saturday, it alerted me on coolant temp. The car was cold when I cranked it, I drove for about a mile and it began flashing at 220 degrees (my alert) and continued until 230 degrees when I pulled over and shut the car off. I checked the coolant reservoir and it was barely low so I added a couple oz of distilled water, crunk it and all went back to normal. My max temps stayed between 200 - 205ish. The next day, on a cold crank, it did the exact same thing. Max temp jumped to 230 on a cold crank, then it leveled back out and stayed at a normal temp for the rest of the drive.

I've started watching it more and more each day (it happens daily now) and I've noticed that the car is actually cooling a few times before it reaches max temp. So it may climb to 130, cool 15 -20 degrees, climb to 150, cool, 170, cool, and so on until it finally reaches 230 max temp. It never exceeds 230ish, which I know is actually a safe temp, but this isn't normal for my car.

Notes - I plan to do a some service within 500 or so miles (oil/filter, clean air filter, coolant, trans, RDU, PTU). I don't typically do a full flush of my trans fluid or coolant. I drain the trans/refill and drain coolant resevoir/refill every 10K miles. And I use Motorcraft Orange coolant diluted 50/50 with distilled water.

I'm thinking the thermostat might be going out. What are your thoughts? I don't abuse my car beyond occassional pulls from a stop light. And I live in a generally mild climate. Average temps this week are in the 70's.

I'm starting to think I have a slow coolant leak. I topped it off last night before the kids' softball game and again this morning.

Where did you buy the thermostat from? If it's the 170* from Ortiz, Unleashed or Gearhead, we have had some instances where the spring fails on the Rat Stat unit and the unit essentially "chatters" and causes similar "bounce back" cooling characteristics, and then fails to open up top, but inconsistently. Think of it link a starter or flywheel with missing teeth and it will have issues if it lands on those teeth but otherwise functions fine.

Depending on the age of the thermostat, you may be able to warranty it. Otherwise I'd just replace it to be safe. We don't specify a replacement schedule for them, but like any other wear item they do need to be replaced occasionally, but usually it's like every 75k miles or so. Similar to spark plugs, I don't mess with them unless I have an issue.

I got it about 3 years ago from Unleashed. I've been on the go so much lately I honestly haven't looked around for a leak yet. And it's rained every day this week so I wouldn't notice a puddle. I actually have some free time tonight so I'll take a look and see what I can see.

From what you're saying, I think it is the thermostat. The coolant has never been low enough for the car to run hot and this morning it didn't run to 230 like before. In fact, I haven't noticed it over 200 all day. So the issue seems to be pretty sporadic.

yea might be time to just go ahead and replace it. Reische is another good option, we sell both on our website.

Reische is a great thermostat, recommended by a few tuners. It opens and shuts when it suppose to. Stay away from the ones at the parts store, those can be off 20 + - degrees. Reische isn't cheap, but quality never is.

Slip some cardboard under there and see if water pump is weeping. Coolant leak on a 3.5 isn't a joke. It's either going in your engine or on the ground.

I didn't find any leaks from just a quick visual check. I'm going to pick up some dye on my lunch break and I'll look with a black light tonight. If it's not an obvious external leak tonight, I'll park it and take it to a mechanic.

You might try driving with the lower engine cover off for a few days so that you can get a visual inspection on the ground after it sits, idles, etc. Like mentioned above, a sheet of cardboard works great and won't disappear when dried, it'll leave a residue from the coolant that you can use to get an idea of where the leak path ends and then trace it back to the source. That of course, it assuming that Levels have dropped. If no external leak, you might be burning or evaporating it somehow.

Coolant is still going somewhere. I'm adding a few oz of coolant daily. I poured some dye in the reservoir today so I'm hoping the issue will show itself tonight.

It's leaking somewhere on the passenger side of the car. The driver's side is pretty clean. I'll leave the lower cover off tomorrow and probably take the front bumper off this weekend so I can get to everything better.

Ok guys, I'm pretty sure this is my leak. From what I understand this is a "weep hole". A buddy and I pressurized the system and it held fine. It wasn't until we let the engine warm to operating temps that you can see it leaking. Does anyone have experience?

Happened on my 2013 SEL. You got lucky like me, coolant went out instead of going in. At least you won't lose the engine.

This isn't going to be cheap. I may end up having to go to the dealership.
Mine was 1,800 and some change, you can do it yourself, I could have, but my hands arent reliable anymore so I paid someone else to do it.
