Decided I needed to upgrade my trans cooler also. My temps are making me uncomfortable on long freeway drives. I am averaging right at 216 to 218 at a sustained 85 mph.

I will be removing my stock PP trans cooler and I am going to try and stuff this cooler between the condenser and the crash bar. If I have to notch the crash bar, so be it. I will try to mount it as low as I can so that I can keep as much air flow on the other components behind it. 4 times the surface area, more capacity, and $66 dollars shipped my house, worth a try.

FWIW a few weeks ago I used my wife’s NA 3.5 Flex (6F50 trans) to haul a 24’ pontoon over 300 miles. I was watching trans temp like a hawk, and on flat-ish land it was hey pretty steady around 210-215 degrees. Coming home sans trailer, it was still 210 degrees but just took a lot longer to get to that temp.

What I’m getting at is I think you’re still at the design temperature of the bypass valve and nowhere near having the cooler fully taxed. Replacing the trans cooler won’t help you if the bypass valve is still limiting flow to the cooler, so you might want to explore different valve options first.

lol never mind I see you already did it and it seems to be helping

Installed my new trans cooler over the weekend. I made it way harder than it should have been. Grr....However, trans temps dropped at a sustained 90 mph in 107 degree heat to 200 degrees. I am happy. Also it appears my trans was overfilled almost by 2.5 quarts.......I have a theory on this.

When my trans was replaced at 3k miles of break in I did the 5 out and 5 in. My trans dropped 7 quarts....I should have know. I put 7 back and and checked the level. At that point it was high, but not crazy.

Working on it this weekend I wanted see exactly where it was at. Ended up dropping 2.5 quarts before it was happy. Geez. So yeah.

I also in a hast to get to breakfast closed the hood on a quart of trans fluid that I had placed in the engine bay.......that caused a mess and a mini panic attack....I am an idiot.

I can identify with the idiot moment. A couple weeks ago when I changed my oil, I poured about a third of a quart into the oil filter, then rolled under the car on my creeper to put the filter on the car. I could not get it to thread for the life of me, so as I rolled back out from under the car I accidentally kicked the rest of the quart of oil over. Usually I would put the cap back on it but for whatever reason I did not this time. After cleaning up the oil and already fuming I realized that I had bought the wrong filter. Had to go back to the parts store to get the right filter and another quart of oil. Luckily there are two different parts stores almost side by side less than a quarter mile from my house. I went to the 2nd parts store to get those. No need for the other parts store to know that I'm an idiot.

I have done that exact thing. However I had to do the walk of shame....

So this weekend I changed the oil and did a 5 out and 5 in trans fluid swap. Oil only had 2,100 miles on it. However it was treated pretty rough and was pretty black. I am heading to Cali next weekend and as always, I change the oil and trans fluid before longish road trips in the SHO.

On all of my test driving with the new trans cooler temps never got above 195 degrees. I am super happy about that. However, Thursday will be the test. 90 mph sustained in 105 to 110 degree heat for hours at a time, will be a good test for the new trans cooler set up. I hope it hold at 200 degrees or below. That is way better then the sustained 217 degrees before.

Okay! Hottest the ambient temp got was 109. Fastest I got up to 105 mph. I averaged 88 through AZ, and roughly 83 through CA. Hottest the trans got was 199.23 degrees. I would say that is a win for the upgraded cooler.

On my return trip I averaged 88 mph through CA and 95 mph through AZ. Through Coachella (big long hill sections) in 113 degree weather my trans got to roughly 205 degrees. Ambient air temps never got below 109 degrees from Palm Springs all the way to Phoenix. After getting through the hills, it leveled off at 201 degrees. I will take those numbers all day.

That’s a huge win! You have got to be adding a ton of life to your trans.

Haha, did you strip the interior or what!? That’s better than some non tuned SHO’s get.

Nope. Full weight with me in it and my small bag. Tires set at a cold 44 psi, freshly washed so she was stream lined. My H&R's had to have played a role in this as well. I also removed 1/3 of my weather stripping under the hood (drivers side) and cut open the vents on my splash guard.

Best I have ever gotten was 26 mpg averaging 75 mph on 91 octane on the same trip.

what's the idea or benefits of cutting open the vents on the splash guard ??

There are vents that go directly into transmission area along with the PTU area. Kind of acts like a Ram-air under the car.
However, from the factory they are blocked off.

If you look at them, they direct air to the exhaust and to the PTU. The Flex came with them stock "cut" open. With that being said, if you can direct more air to critical components under the car to cool things why not?

I have been 137 mph with this set up and everything was stable. My hood didn't bubble and it seems like everything is happy. I am not worried about water either, because some SHO are running about with the splash guard.

You just answered the million dollar question for me. Anything that helps carry the heat out the back of the pan is a bonus, my only hold back was if it would induce any noise or fluttering. Several Ford and othr manufacturers use the ducting (usually with a bit of venting to direct the air on the inside). It always made me wonder why Ford has the delta's on the pan and didn't open them.

Incoming Upgrade:

I have needed a HPFP for awhile now. I have tried every way to justify spending the money for a XDi. I have come close to purchasing one more times than I want to admit. However, I couldn't pull the trigger.

That being said. I know I will catch some crap for my next statement.

I recently purchased a slightly used FS pump. I weighed the pros and cons (they can attest to that) and for the price I couldn't pass on the opportunity presented to me.

What I took into account:

Yearly mileage of my SHO: Less then 4k a year (if that). I don't daily my SHO.
Mods: I have all of the supporting mods (minus turbos).
Single Fuel Source: I should be able to run straight E54 out of the pump. No more mixing, just testing.
Fuel Pressure: I won't have to worry about FP drops anymore (my stock HPFP recovers well). I still have boost issues, but this should basically allow me to pin the gates closed and let them eat.

I have only seen one documented FS HPFP failure (not all facts have been presented yet) and one with XDI. I know there are a couple of 11 second SHO's on the FS HPFP as well.

I will be removing my stock HPFP and vacuum sealing it. It will make its new home in the trunk with the exact tools needed to change it out. When I go on long road trips I will swap back in the stock HPFP and change tunes. When I get to my destination, the FS HPFP will go back and I will reflash the tune. Then the GAP band tour will begin.

I will modify the foam and engine cover as well. If I cant see it, then it isn't there? Correct?

No harm in buying one used, you aren't giving 'them' your money. Lol!

Logo can easily be covered with a sticker or something if necessary. I think you will like it!
