Radar detector best way to wire it

I have a Uniden R3. I want to mount it under the rear view mirror. It seems there are two options to wire it. One is the a the mirror tap and the other is a hard wire.

Do either of these drain the battery? Is one preferable over the other? It seems easier to be able to route it into the mirror than run a long wire elsewhere.

Get something like this. I use a similar one in my wife's FLEX for her drive camera. I mainly used it out of convenience ( had the part laying around ) as I didn't want to take any more apart and I had solid access to constant power. You can find these for anywhere between $10-$30

If you search on my screen name, you should find how I installed a V1..above the rear view mirror. Hardly visible from outside.

The mirror tap is much easier than running to the fuse box

It's not difficult to remove the ceiling console and if you have a sunroof there is switched power up there. If you're comfortable tapping in to the factory wiring, this is a much less expensive option than buying an over-priced cable or module. I tapped in to my ceiling console to power my DVR in my former 2011 SHO and my current 2013 MKS EcoBoost.

I have a rear view mirror mount for my ****** and tapped into the mirror plug. It's not constant on but I also don't leave it up when I'm out of the car. It gets put away, no need to give anyone an excuse to break in.

No comment about wiring but I LOVE my R3. Way better than the ****** Redline that I really liked. Been eyeballing the R7

I have a Beltronics radar detector and hard power cord and was able to tap into the moonroof power by removing the small upper compartment console and routing the wire behind the camera housing on the windshield. I used a splice adapter so no cutting of wires were needed. I also routed the control wire under the edge of the headliner close to the windshield and down the a-pillar and mounted the mute button on the side of thw center console. The power is key on so no worries about running your battery low and also doesn't turn on when remote start is enabled until you enter the vehicle and press start.

I don't recall which color the wire is specifically since it was done 3 years ago.

Didn’t know if a blend mount would allow the detector to see beneath this. Which I’m not even sure what exactly it’s covering to be honest.

Do you remember what wire was positive and negative? Have everything apart and haven’t had much luck with my trial and error (do not have a volt meter or test light)
