1992 Ford Taurus SHO 3.4L

So my husband is the owner of. 1992 Ford Taurus SHO. The manual version. I don't know nearly as much about the car as he does. That's for sure, but we are constantly having issues with finding a reliable mechanic. Any pointers or references? We live in the South Florida region. We have had this thinng for 5 years now and have put thousands upon thousands of dollars into it and it still dies on us! Right now, he's having an issue with a part to the clutch. He doesn't think the mechanic is installing it correctly and he said they didn't attach a piece as well. He thinks it's sabotage, but who knows. He tells me that the part isn't manufactured anymore. The car is currently parked at my child's daycare because we can't move it. How do we keep on pouring money into the car and it just gets thrown away? Any pointers? Tips? Suggestions? Anything?

btw, your 1992 mtx SHO is a 3.0 liter.

Can you post some photos of the area where you think the missing part goes? Then we can see what you are talking about.

Pretty much the consensus here is that if you can't work on these cars yourself, they are going to be too expensive to own, because there are few mechanics in the country with experience on these cars, and the cars are unique enough that if you don't have the experience, you will be guessing wrong a lot.

Search on the forum for how to pull codes, then pull the codes and report what they are.

There are forum members in Florida who post on here.

Most things regarding the clutch system are still manufactured and can be bought in a kit form. Everything else can be bought used on this forum.

If your car does not move anymore, and it is clutch related, you have a throw out bearing (TOB) that has broken through the pressure plate fingers, which is a very common failure. The clutch kit is usually a bit over $200.00, the flywheel refinish is usually $50,00 and the best price ever to install this stuff is $500.00. And that is supposing that removing the exhaust Y-Pipe, and loosening the sub frame bolts goes well. But with this done, the vehicle becomes very reliable again. You can get a video of a clutch change from SHONut Performance, if you consider doing this yourself.

Check Rockauto and SHOSource for parts.

Always go to a shop or individual that is recommended from a member on here. It is too expensive to have a shop learn how to do things, for the first time, on your car.

There is a Florida SHO area in the SHO Clubs section. Kinda dead but it might be worth asking for leads on a mechanic. I sent Don D a message. Hopefully he has someone in the old rolodex. A good tech is hard to find.

That being said, a clutch should be one of the things that is not so unique vs other cars with a clutch. Need more info for sure.

This is the clutch kit that's been recommended many times. I bought one and its currently being installed. Comes with a new throw out bearing, which is what went bad on mine.

Like the others said, this car will teach you how to be a mechanic. That or have deep pockets. If I didn't work on my 2 91s I'd be a couple grand in just in the past 2 years. And they dont get driven that much. Much luck and keep us updated!

The only thing we don't have is time. And money. He usually does most of the work himself. We just live in an apartment complex and dont have a lift on hand. We have tons of parts all over our place and his car is filled. We just don't have time.

Hey I was close!!! My truck is the 3.4l then I guess.04 toyota 4runner sr5. Or mayne 3.4 was just randomly in my head. Idk.

He said it's the cluch mechanism. I don't have pictures. I can swing by the car tomorrow, but idk if ill be able to see what exactly it is.

So idk if I'm describing it right, but the clutch just drops all the way down the the floor. Almost like there's no type of resistance what-so-ever. He has been lookomg for someone forever. And have had numerous hands in there so who know whats messed up on it. It did come down from NY so it is rusted thanks to all of the salt during winters. But it's manageable. We just need someone trusting. He's too lame to go on one of these forums things. Even though he lives on SHO source for parts.

Well that's a problem. There is a ton of experience on here.

That's not the most common verbage so let's look at clutch fork, pressure plate failure, throw out bearing, clutch cable I'm not sure what else is left (clutch disk and pressure plate but that's not really likely). Is it something that can be seen either underneath or interior ( and snap a pic or vid?) Sometimes text or word choice is not precise enough.

This isn't a daily driver car right?
