For a water pump. 91,000 miles. I was going to do this myself. I actually started tearing it down this spring but then mangled my right hand had had to have surgery and was out of work for a while. Now the more I have been reading and thinking I have decided I don't want to do it from the top. The wife's 2014 Taurus SEL just had her pump replaced at 111,000 miles and they just dropped the whole front subframe with the car up on the hoist.

My question is, what else should I be replacing while It's opened up? Off the top of my head:

-All 4 cam phasers
-Both slave chains or secondary timing chains
-Primary timing chain
-All guides
-All plungers
-All 4 solenoids
-Front seal of course
-Oil separator
-Lower Temp Thermostat for future tune
-Have a look see at intake valve carbon build up
-I'm doing plugs and a 3-map when I get it back.

What alse? Am I wasting my money replacing anything? The guy that did the wifes car didn't do the phasers or secondary timing chains at 111,000 miles. He said he's seen them holding up much better that the 4.6/5.4 motors and talked me into leaving them. I've been religious at replacing oil since we got that one at 18,000 miles so we'll see how it holds up. I'm not taking the chance on my Ecoboost.

If you're going into the phasers and chains-- I bet the timing chain tensioner is fine, but I would consider it.

The 5.0 coyotes have a redesign with an extra tensioner, so both sides of the timing chain can be adjusted for chain stretch. The original design has guides on both sides and a tensioner on only one side. Chain stretches were big enough that the tensioner, at full extension, still had slop over time from the stretch. Any chain can stretch beyond whatever limit I suppose but these were failing often enough to get Ford off their butt and add another. Not sure about the 3.5 design but maybe similar?

If you have the older style timing set in your SHO, this is a good opportunity to upgrade to the newer style. See attached document for what all is needed for the entire jobbie.

That list is fantastic! Thank you! Is it safe to assume that 2012 is the same as 2015?

yes, except you should already have the upgraded timing set, so no changes design wise. use the list in the right hand column, and u should be good.

Awesome. Thank you so much! I'm only at about 43,000 miles right now, but I bought the car last July with just under 16,000. :). And I think I might do the upgraded turbos while the engine is it for the chains...
