When I'm out driving, I get home back into my driveway and I smelled this ungodly smell. Wife thought our septic system failed. So I go poking around and looks like when it's heated up front differential is leaking. 44k miles, I have the Ford premium ESP so I'm sure it would be covered.

Has anyone experienced this before? Any TSB out there that mentions?

I'm going to keep this thing on real short Trips until I can get to dealer next Friday.

Normally described as a propane smell, but yes, multiple TSBs over the years. The latest one describes replacement of the idler bearing rather than the entire PTU. Hope you get a new PTU.
Propane with a side of failing drain field haha. Dealer was not surprised all covered under power train

Dropped off this morning and got the call, PTU leaking and going to be replaced. Was told Ford has to approve due to overall dollar amount but shouldn't be an issue.

Make the sure the undertray/skid tray is clean. If fluid has been leaking it could have pooled there. I would hope the dealership would clean that lol.

The good news, this would be considered related damage. Bring it back and complain of the odor.

Sometimes it is hard to get oil out of metal parts short of driving it. Drive it hard and see if you can burn off the oil. Soap and water may not cut it.
