Just had the PTU, RDU and tranny fluids changed by the senior Ford mechanic. Waited for 2 weeks to have this guy become available at the dealer to work on my 2018 SHO . Very particular and thorough is his reputation

He came out and met me after and totally confirmed what SHOdded said about changing these fluids after 5k or so break in period. Case in point there were slivers in the PTU and RDU .

He said that even after the revisions over the past years to the PTU it still has issues and not doing regular maintenance is ridiculous . He services the local police cars and sees the effects .

His thought is that Ford thinks it's easier to just replace them because of the labor required to service them .He went over work of removing the catalytic, heat shield . He gave me the 9 page instruction sheet on how to do it .

Now that it is done he recommends doing it again at about 40k .

Oddly the dealer provided a maintenance schedule from Ford for my VIN that said to change the PTU and RDU at various time and distance intervals. Of course that is contrary to the owners manual .

I am just glad you found a dealership/tech willing to do the work. Good on you for having the patience to wait for the opportunity. Cultivate this relationship :)

Maybe we should build a list of dealerships that work on PIs and PUs. I know many PDs are doing it inhouse, but could be the right question to ask.

How about that. A dealer has a maintenance schedule. I guess he didn't get the memo that this is a lifetime unit.

I think he said the last revision was 2016 . He did say it helped but they're still suspect.
...and an honest assessment from the tech. I like this place you go to.

I agree! MWH100, would you mind sharing the dealership (maybe even the mechanic's) name and location?

Now that you have gotten the pat on the back, would you mind sharing the details? The dealer and mechanic name, the 9 page document, etc.

Good info. I have 13k kms (8k miles) on my car, so I'll get it done. Did you use the dealer in Nanaimo? Can you give a ballpark figure on price?

The dealership is Steve Marshall Ford in Nanaimo BC if you're coming up here for service. I won't give you the mechanic's name . Its a Ford document . I wouldn't know how or if it's possible to attach a scanned PDF .

Nanaimo! I was there many years ago. What a great town! A very chilly, cold winter town... but a great town.

Not to be mean to MHW, but they call Nanaimo "Surrey By The Sea". If you're familiar to Surrey, you know thats not a compliment. LOL. I actually like Nanaimo....except for that two months during a very hot Summer that I did my Combat Leader's Course (Canadian Military) back in 1988. UGH.

I just went to my local Ford dealer yesterday and made an appointment for the PTU fluid on Feb1. The tech there was very knowledgeable and helpful. He too does the local RCMP Police Taurus'. He absolutely agreed that doing the PTU at this interval (8k miles in my case), was a good idea. He too disagreed with Ford about the intervals THEY provide. However, he also stated that doing the RDU and trans now was NOT a good idea. He stated that waiting until 40-60k kms (25-40k miles) was a better choice. He said that those components have not been worn in enough to do a fluid change now. He was impressed that a customer would have this "first hand knowledge" about these fluids. I told him that, while I was a bit of a car nut and **** about maintenance, I could not take the credit and that this forum was my source. Regardless, he would do whatever I want, but I'm inclined to do just the PTU now and will wait until next Spring for the trans and diff.

I was quoted 300 bucks or so for the PTU.
