Just heard about the timing chain/ cam issues hitting EcoBoost engines.

Like I said above, just heard about this.

A fellow I know has been told at this point he will need a new engine for his '13 F150 with 180,000km (111k miles.)

Started with the odd rattly start and is now a rattle start from cold every time.

It looks like timing chain stretches and things get misaligned then engine chews itself up. He had the pan dropped and 3 magnet passes later it still was pulling metal.

So far I have only read TSB's about F150's regarding this issue.

Are we affected?

Should we be concerned?

Does occasionally affect the transverse platform, tho nowhere near the rate of the F150. Using quality full synthetic oil and regular coolant flushes will further extend the longevity of the system.

is the vc3 or the vc7 motorcraft needed ?

Neither for our cars. Workshop manual says to use VC1. The basic process is to add vc1, let it do it's thing. Then remove the radiator and clean out the sediment. With the radiator removed the thermostat is removed and system backflused.

Full service manuals for our car are available through Helm if you're interested RayJay

Won't need such products if you follow an aggressive flush schedule like I mentioned. If you look at Ford's recommended schedule for coolant servicing, after the initial flush, you go to a 50K interval. So my question is, why would you let the original coolant stagnate for 100/105K miles?

It's nowhere near the rate of the F-150's because there are nowhere near the number of EcoBoost Tauruses on the road as 150's. Granted, the torque output is less too.

As far as oil, synthetic oil really doesn't help unless you are extending the oil change intervals.

Coolant changes won't help the timing chain stretch issue at all. Our 2010 Lincoln MKS EcoBoost (Taurus SHO) had the rattling sound at startup by 50k miles. We traded it for a 2014 MKS EcoBoost...great car. It has 32k miles on it now.
