Has anybody updated their sync in their vehicles and if so is it worth it. Right now I do not like the voice activated sync. I like to say what I want and then be done with it not saying yes, no and have to repeat yourself too many times

Not sure what you mean by "update" - but I went from Sync 2 in my 2013 to Sync 3 in my 2016. Sync 3 is much faster, and sorta does recognize speech a little better, and not "think" about it too long before it does something.

However, I find it still has that annoying step-by-step logic to it sometimes.

Sync 3 1.0 to Sync 3 2.2 wasn't worth it except for the Android Auto. The voice it uses to speak with is slightly different, and I don't like the change. It sounds slightly more garbled sometimes, when reading text or messages.

The best thing about the updates 3 2.2 or 2.3 is Android auto. Semi free navigation, voice to text replys, random Google questions answered. Wanna call someone and dont know the number? Google does. You have an addess stored in your contacts list? Say navigate to grandma's and Google will SHO you the way to guide that sleigh. If there is too much traffic over the hill and through the woods, google will sugest using the express way. Google will also tell you jokes and stores on your long trips too.

I do like sync as a back up, but I really use Android auto 90 of the time.

For you apple cokes, only apple apps work with car play. No Google for you.

One thing thats disappinting after the update. Pandora only seems to work through usb.

I think I missed your point. You want to throw out sync and do something different all together. This may be challenging. Depending on what generation of sync you have you may permanently disable some features (gen 1, 2 or 3). In sync 2 and three I'm not sure how you would interface with the instrument cluster or how it would react without and APIM. Sync3 would be the same, but you would also affct ambient light selection as well as the ability to change keyless entry codes? I didn't read you could do this through the touch pad, I would have to search the owners manaul.

What version of Sync are you staring with? If you are talking about upgrading to a later version there is no easy way to go between Sync 1, 2, and 3. I do not know what is involved or if it is even possible to upgrade Sync 1.

Sync 2 can be updated to Sync 3 but requires at least a Sync 3 APIM that must be programmed with correct as built data for the specific vehicle, a capacitive touch screen(the Sync2 touch resistive screen will not work. You will also need a new GPS antenna to have navigation, and replace the center console connector hub to use android auto/apple car play(USB may work without android auto or car play but the SD card and analog A/V inputs will not). Kits can be had online from $1499 to over $2k or you can source the parts and SHOULD be able to program with Forscan.

I noticed when I upgraded from sync3 1.0 to 2.3 the headlights no longer turn on when you use remote start. I have been playing with ford-alexa though, that's neat.

I just finished the upgrade to Sync3 in my 2015. It was from a salvaged 17 Edge. Worst part was getting into the dash, and the number of screws and panels that had to come off. Everything else was almost plug and play. Only problem is I have no path to upgrade from 2.2 to 3.0 since my car is not supposed to have it... All in I was just under $350 for the parts and as built modifications

If the dealership i.d.s. a sync 3 vehicle and upgrades it it will work. Or you just find a vin for a sync 3 vehicle and download the update. Did you grab the vin from the doner vehicle? Might want to go back for it.

I was afraid the update was VIN locked, as reading the process says the reporting process has the VIN imbedded... Maybe I am just over thinking it...

It does, but there are work arounds. It' just not supported so usually a dealership will treat it like its plague ridden.

So I had the VIN from the donor Edge. I set up a dummy Ford Owners account with the VIN, and was able to download the update to USB, and it seems the update worked. I assume I DO NOT want to report the upgrade back to the ford website then? That will more than likely cause problems?

If you don' report it back, you will not be able to update it again via the ford site. You'l have to go to a dealership

I haven't looked into the log it creates but you could always change any of the identifiers to the dummy car if you want to be extra safe when reporting the update.
