Hello everybody,

My wife bought a 2012 SHO almost 2 years ago and we've owned it through one winter in Iowa already and are starting another. We managed to get by alright, but the thing handles very poorly in the snow with the 20" wheels and performance tires. I have a couple of questions regarding putting smaller factory OEM wheels with all season or winter driving tires on it.

1. Would the size of the brakes interfere with any of the smaller OEM wheels, like the 17" or 18"?

2. If the 17" or 18" OEM wheels do work, would anybody know of someone with a used set - doesn't have to be nice since they're just winter wheels - for sale willing to ship to Iowa? The first summer we owned the car, I found an absolute steal of a set on eBay for $500 that included perfectly good tires, but couldn't afford them at the time and had to let them go. Since then, I haven't been able to find another deal that good.

Any help is appreciated and I'm looking forward to being a member of the community here! :thankyou:

First, what tires does it have currently? Goodyear F1 or Michelins?

The Performance Package comes with the Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperCar, which are summer tires. This would explain bad experience in the cold/snow.

If you do have the F1's, you just need to get yourself a good All Season tire. A good one is Continental Extreme Contact DWS. The Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 also are ranked high. Check out this test: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests/testDisplay.jsp?ttid=177

Thanks for the info PokerMunkee.

I should've specified earlier, but we have the F1's on it now. They still have acceptable, but barely, tread on them and the car is at 24k miles. I'm sure that's not helping things, but I doubt these would perform much better in the snow regardless.

I guess I was thinking that I could have a summer set and winter set of wheels and tires for each half of the year. However, those F1's do need to be replaced and I'm neither racing the car in the summer, nor am I wealthy so perhaps the best thing to do is just put all-seasons on the existing 20" rims.

I looked up the DWS on TireRack and they don't have a 99Y model, but they have a 103W. Since this car can't even go 163 MPH currently, let alone 186 MPH, I think those should be fine :p. After some Googling, TireRack also appears to have the best price on them at $221/tire. Know of any better deals than that?

Also one other question that I couldn't seem to find the answer for, what is the average life expectancy for the DWS?

My SHO (non-pp)came with the Michelin MXM4 all season tires, and it's been doing great in this snow and sub-zero weather we've been having here in CO. I've actually had to chuckle a few times watching 4X4 trucks struggling as I'm happily chuggin' down the road.

Messages Not Going Through

Thanks for the responses! I tried to reply to them a week ago, but they never went through. Am I on a probationary period or something until messages just get auto-approved?

I think we're going to go with the Continental DWS. We're getting plenty of snow here in Iowa, so I'll post again with how it's going once we get them on the car. :)

I am glad that you posted this. My 2011 has the Michelins and they are showing signs of sidewall cracking so I might be looking at new sneakers in the not too distant future.

I'd be interested to hear how the Continentals are in the wet and dry as I haven't had very good luck with Michelins.

The DWS's are superb tires in all but the deepest-snow-type weather conditions. The only thing I would say is that you should not take off at WOT, and you would get somewhat better steering response from a couple of other tires due to their stiffer sidewall. But as a package, the characteristics of the DWS are topnotch. Check out Tire Rack reviews to get an idea :)

Forgot to mention. They are directional tires, so you cannot criss-cross during rotation. Front-to-back only.

There is a member on this forum, that has a set of Blizzacks that will fit your car...I would have taken them myself, but I had already order a set from tire rack....

Alright, well I'm an Iowa resident and as you may have heard, we've had some pretty rough weather for the last week (freezing rain on Thursday & Friday of last week followed by 8 inches of snow and right now it's -6 degrees, -25 with windchill). I'm reporting back that I'm incredibly impressed with these tires.

I ordered the Continentals from TireRack late Tuesday night, got them Thursday (shipping from Indiana was very fast), and had them on the car Friday. With these, I'm able to do about a 3/4 throttle pull with minimal slippage on a snow covered, but plowed road. Letting off the throttle and turning like normal had zero issues and all but very sudden and harsh braking caused the anti-lock brakes to kick in. If I flogged it pretty good around corners and braked harsh, I could get the car to slide, but it was never uncontrollable like before. I'm incredibly impressed with these tires and can't thank you guys enough for the recommendation. My wife is now much safer!

Hope you all have a Merry Christmas!

Sounds good! I'm glad you kept the 20's and got good tires. It seems they are performing well!
