Well, eff. This is the first I've heard of problems with the Magnaflow y-pipe. Guess the new '94 will be getting something else..

SO putting 3.2 heads on a 3.0 will do little to nothing and be harmless?

Aftermarket converters in general are kinda ******.
I'd guess it has something to do with skimping on the precious metals inside.

Yeah. Have you ever seen the physical size difference between oem and aftermarket cats? I can't believe they can function nearly as well. That being said, I have a SHo Source pipe coming and the Magnaflow cats were already delivered. Hopefully they last a little while. Need them for inspection.

I bought used magnaflow y pipe a couple years ago and I've put probably 30k on it and I'm not light on the car and I've seen no problems as of yet

I have one of the very first Midwest SHO pipes. One of the cats failed about a year ago. The actual failure mode was the rockwool insulation that was wrapped around the catalyst block blew out and that let the catalyst just rattle around in the metal shell. I was able to catch it quickly and I just gutted both cats. It's raspy but it's functional for the time being.

Loss of low end torque is typical when agressive porting is done to the heads. A track car that revs will benefit from the HP increase at the high end, where a DD street machine is mucho better with low end torque.

Bubba was telling me about this, the magnaflow y-pipe coming apart inside the cats. I got it from Jayro with about 30k on it, I have put about 20k on it. Time to spend some money at SHO Source. :frown: Especially when I am trying to save money for a potential relocation.

Just gut it if you are worred about it. It will then be fine until you have the cash to buy a new one. I was able to gut mine without cutting anything.

How do you gut it?

I took a bunch of 1/2 in drive extension and universal joints and attached them to an impact wrench. I could jam the extensions into the catalyst block and give the impact a quick spin to break it up. I also used a piece of 1/4" steel rod to help break things up.

Have you inspected it? Cant you usually tap them with a hammer and listen for loose particles inside?

If you are just getting rid of them you could gut them, or cut them out and replace them with a piece of pipe. If you cut them out you could sell them at OmniSource and get some $$.
