Does anyone have any contacts or recommends a technician in the DFW area that can weld the camshaft sprockets fairly resonable as i am on a shoestring budget? I have a '97 SHO. Thanks.

can you turn a wrench?
If you have any mechanical inclinations or general knowledge on engines disassembly/reassembly is not that difficult.

That cuts the cost by 60-80%.

Look up some local machine shops or welding shops. I would think you have plenty of options. I would expect the SHO contact above would be a very good option.

I had mine welded locally for $60.
Spent a day taking it apart, rented a car dolly for $20, took it to the welder (assisted) and had it back home in a couple hours. Spent another few hours doing some routine maintenance -- plugs, coils, cleaning intake/imrc etc.

The cost is primarily due to the time in the engine work. Any competent welder can do the welds in an hr or so.

Don't the cams get warped from welding?

Theoretically they could, but there's no history of the thousands that have been welded of any warping issues that I'm aware of.

The cams are hollow but thick walled. I think it would have to be some pretty bad welding to heat them enough to cause a problem.

Nothing theoretical about it. Seen it a number of times.

properly welded cams will not warp.
Correct, properly being the operative term!

Which is why going to someone who has done them before is a lot better idea than just bringing them to a welder you find in the Yellow Pages. Someone who is the best and most experienced welder in the world has likely never welded V8 SHO camshafts inside a motor before and despite their credentials I wouldn't want them doing them for the first time in MY motor!

Theres enough runout in the housing for it to be ok...

(Chris might get this one...)

lol This post is sarcasm.

On a serious note, I've seen some hackjob welds myself. It's amazing what some people with a welder are capable of. Scary.
