Hey guys, I plan on doing my own oil changes when the time comes, but I cant find anywhere specifically where it says what motorcraft oil is put in the SHO from factory?

Is it the motorcraft semi synthetic or full synthetic oil? I plan to stick with it but I dont wanna go full synthetic if they didnt from the factory.

Thanks guys.

I believe motorcraft oil is semi synthetic. Pretty sure it says so right on the bottle.

Ford uses the 5W-30 Synthetic Blend from the factory.

Motorcraft has oil in both Synthetic Blend and Full Synthetic.

Full synthetic gives you added protection.... for little money. Six quarts of Mobil 1 at Wally world... are under $30. Be sure and use the viscosity of the oil (5W-20 or 5W-30) that is shown on your oil fill cap and in you owners manual. 2010 5W-20.................
2011 5W-30.

I have ran mobil one in the past in other cars and was very happy with it. I have also stuck with motorcraft before in fords and never had issues either...

Ill give it some thought I guess. The car has 30k on it right now and Im not sure I wanna switch to mobil one. I know it most likely wont cause any issues but Im just undecided...

We had a radar detector thread here last week, so I guess it's time for another religion argument. :munch:

I've been real happy with Royal Purple in the trucks and Amsoil in the bike.

I've always wanted to try Royal Purple but I haven't been able to find it at a reasonable price in my area. I've used Mobil One for over 15 years now, and never had a problem with it.

It's not cheap, but only a buck or so more per quart than Mobil One (but a lot more expensive than the motorcraft semi-syn). <$10 bucks per change is pretty cheap over the life of a car (<$400 over 200k miles).

I actually prefer the Amsoil but getting it is such a PITA.

Lot of guys here use it, but they pay mucho for it.
Is it really that good?
I also like Mobil 1 and have used it for quite some time.

My F150 runs quieter on it but other than that I don't have any data to indicate why one would be better than the other. I've never been one to do the super extended intervals with oil analysis and all that-- the oil doesn't cost THAT much. Besides, you get really cool stickers when you buy a case of Amsoil :nut:

My '97 A4 developed some engine problems shortly after I switched to Mobil 1 at 96k (which in all likelihood was just a coincidence) so that gave me a bad taste in my mouth.

All I can say with certainty is that I've run nothing but Royal Purple and Amsoil in the F150 and my wife's Expedition for a combined 250k now without a lick of trouble out of either engine. (Except for some fuel injector problems on her engine but you can't really blame the oil on that).

Going back to the OP's question, Ford was tight with BP for a while there, even putting there logo on the fuel caps and I am pretty sure Motorcraft oil is re-branded BP or Castrol. BP owns Castrol. If the relationship / partnership is still there, I willing to bet that your factory fill was a BP/Castrol product.

I've heard others complain about issues when switching to Mobil 1 and found it interestingly strange.......I'm wondering if it is in fact coincidence or something else possibly.

I may be confusing the Amsoil with Motul oil when I say expensive. If so my bad.
Your usage of Amsoil and Royal Purple says a lot for its cred. I often see R/P advertised and on certain car shows but have never seen it for sale in these parts. Must be more popular and available down there in the U.S.
Can't say that I've seen Amsoil either. I'll have to check around -- I'm due for a 'restock' sometime soon. and it sounds like your F150 loves the stuff.

TNX for the info.

I think I'm really leaning towards Castrol Edge since it is now available in 5W-20. I use Castrol High Mileage in our old Sable and Mobil One in the Explorer. I always used Castrol in my motorcycles and always liked it plus they are big supporters of Drag Racing. Like I said earlier, I've used Mobil One a long time without problems, but I've also heard of others that have developed problems after switching but not so with me, nothing but favorable things to say about both Mobil One oil and their filters.

if your going to use a 20wt oil in Mobil 1, do the 0w-20 instead of their 5w-20. it will last longer as well.......

if your going for a 30wt, use the 10w-30 High Mileage....... its great stuff

or step up to 0w-40 if u want to run something thicker, On a turbo car like the new SHO's, I'd be running 10w-30HM or 0w-40 in Mobil 1 if I used the engine hard or ever whent to a track.

the top of the line Castrol Edge is good oil too. They recently switched all their full syn to having the name edge in it, when they changed to the SN/GF5 formula, so the old Castrol Edge is now Castrol Syntec Edge with Titanium I think it says on the bottle.... it costs more then the regular syn anyway so if u look at prices its not hard to get confused.

Back to being OT, Conoco Phillips is who I believe makes motorcraft oils right now.....

Funny you should mention that, Mark. My brother has switched over to that for his Acura and Vette and it seems to be fine for him.
