I have a 93 mtx and i think my gearbox is bad but not sure.
The shifter doesn't stay behind third when in neutral...or at anytime, normally when i shift it goes one two then slides over for third but not in car. I have to move the shifter in front of third then push it into gear. a number of times i have down shifted into first because of this issue.

Can anyone help me

I'm having a hard time understanding exactly what you are saying, but I am going to stretch out and say that it sounds like your shifter is loose. You will need to check that all mounting points are nice and secured tightly, then check the condition of the bushings.

let me help clarify, when you take the shifter out of gear and you take your hand off the shifter, it normally floats behind third(in the middle), when in neutral.
My shifter stays behind what ever gear you just took it out of. I have to physically move it in front of third.

thanks for the help i will check to see if the shifter is loose

There's a neutral detent spring and ball bearing inside the transmission that will force the shift linkage to reset to its home position between 3rd and 4th when placed in neutral. He's saying that this doesn't happen anymore.

Either the shift linkage is broken (check inside the shift box underneath the car), or that internal detent spring has failed and is no longer applying tension on the shift shaft to allow it to home between 3rd and 4th.

I would remove the shifter where it attaches to the tranny selector shaft. This is a 10mm nut and stud that looks like a star wars emperial fighter. (o)
Now use a punch and move the selector shaft into neutral. Next, rotate the shaft clockwise and counter clockwise. Does there feel like a detent or a centering point? If so, the problem may be in the shift linkage itself.
