I'm very curious about your tune Rick. Some questions though if you don't mind.
1. I live in FL have you done any hot weather (really flippin hot) testing with this tune to see how it reacts. Turbo's hate heat and I just imagine the knock sensors going gonzo trying to keep down detonation, of course if that's the case the motor isn't going to last long
We also get hot weather here. It has been in the high 80's/90's all week and we beat our car like we stole it on a daily basis. Our tune retains the factory knock sensors/settings.
2. Have you been able to data log this thing yet, I seem to recall some discussion around there being no real data logging so you were really just shooting in the dark with some of the original tunes. Also I heard the PCM is crazy difficult with a stupid amount of parameters that even turbine specialists are having trouble figuring out, what puts you guys "in the know?"
SCT just released the software to datalog, but we were using our own proprietary software to log from day 1. All of the cars we street tuned were logged. I'm not saying we know everything, because there is a definitely a ton of parameters, but our tuner Dan Millen has been tuning for years and takes the time to learn the software and develop files that are safe whicle making excellent power
3. I noticed your graphs aren't showing A/F what's that look like or are you even taking that measurement? I would be curious to see how lean/rich you are running the car as well as what the overall timing looks like. I did a lot of tuning on my old Terminator Cobra and getting the timing right was a bit tricky and if it was wrong, well bye bye 4V. I was lucky, some others weren't playing with boost is a dangerous game.
We do log A/F, again even all fo the cars that were street tuned had A/F monitored. We never post the A/F graphs, because everyone has their own opinion of what A/F should be, but again we tune conservatively while getting great power out of it. We will never tune anything on the edge.
4. On a scale of 1-10 how "safe" is your tune, some people really push the edge with these, can you confidently say it has longevity to it and isn't going to pop a motor if your a responsible driver (had to throw that in because some people are idiots).
I would say our tune is 6-7 out of 10. If you want something very safe, we could just do the transmission with reduced torque management. It makes a noticeable difference. I can honestly say, in my 7 years here I've never seen Dan break a car on the dyno. Obviously with OEM parts, there is no guarantee, but we aren't going to push a customer car to the edge.
I would absolutely love to tune the SHO but I'm a bit paranoid with this new engine, new design and a departure for Ford to go mainstream with a lot of Turbo cars. All the N/A Mustang and Cobra tunes out there are tried and tested in thousands of cars over years of abuse and they still run, this motor and setup and PCM is all new and the level of complexity is high and I think Ford sent out a warning with it's TSB that they don't want people messing with it. The Mustangs are pretty bulletproof and unless your an idiot you can tune them all day and they will stay together (all 5 of mine did and nary a warranty issue) but this car is another animal and I don't feel like departing with $10k to put in a new motor.
Sorry for the dissertation but I just want to be well informed before potentially putting myself in harms way.
Thanks,
Bill
