17x8 wheel tire size question

Currently it has Intrax springs with a coil cut off the front springs. For some reason this car sits higher in the rear than these same springs did on my old 95. That might have something to do with not having a problem.

Just to update, I ended up buying a set of 245/45/17 Bridgestone Potenzas. I figured since I had a set of 245/40/18 with no rubbing I shouldn't have a problem with 245/45/17.

I'm going to have them mounted and balanced tomorrow, I will let everyone know if they rub or not.

So the 245/45/17 fit but it is a very tight fit on my SHO. I haven't been able to drive it except in a parking lot, I am still putting it back together after the paint job, but so far no rubbing.

The rear can be fixed, quite nicely! As an alignment tech, I've tried at a few tricks. I redrilled the strut tower holes and moved in the mount.. I can't remember how much, but I want to say 1/4". I then used the adjustable ingalls rear arms to shorten my arm length accordingly, while keeping most the negative camber (~.06 degrees on both rears).

On an '89 WITH skirts on eibachs w/ 235/45 17s and 8" rims, I would've just barely rubbed my lips. On a gen 2 SHO, this trick should make it possible to not even roll the lip, depending on the wheels offset.

Here's the flip side.

I run 245/40/18 which has pretty much an identical circumference as Kelvin's 245/45/17. My set of wheels is 18X8 with 38mm offset and the driver side rear rubbed horribly over bumps.

It's likely that you may need to reconsider your tire size. You're running a size roughly 1/2" taller than your original 215/60-16 sat at. Additionally, what's your rear camber at? Tweaking the strut will not make the wheel any closer, while you can move further from your wheel well. Read my advice in my above post if you're interested how..

It's a tossup with these cars.

Being that the cars share identical parts and get mixed results only means that you need to make the tweaks you need. Not every cars' setup will be the same for a reason. Look for the two links that position your wheel (that aren't consistent with all SHOs) and that would be the angle of your strut and the length of the control arms (in the OEM arms case, the furthest eccentric setting in your adjustable single arm. This comes at the sacrifice of toeing in/out a wheel for desired camber. NOT ideal! Especially if you're going off the deep end with wide wheels and expensive tires.)

There are many SHOs that take A LOT to set their camber out of the 1.25 degree-field. SAS has something to do with it, of course, but the angle of the dangle can cure it. Sacrifice? Some rear track width. Consequence? Not always the case, but you may have a tail that likes to wag more in and out of turns. I think it's a win-win! haha..

225 is perfect on an 8" rim. 235 is close enough. Anything bigger loses performance.

Depending on where you are at in NC, summer tires work 95% of the time. If you are in the mountains, get summer & winter tires. All-season tires are "no season" tires. They ALL suck for performance, if you are into serious handling. Plus summer tires are better in the wet.

In my experience a 225 has been perfect on a 7'' Rim.

I have 245/40/17's on my 8'' Wide T.D 1.2's and the fit is perfect. The sidewalls sit perfect flush with the lip of the Rim (Not stretched nor Bulged).

I think it depends on the specific Tire in a lot of cases.

I have a set of 225 width tires on a 17x8 set of TD 1.2s in the garage, and they fit quite nicely. However, they are Hoosier R6s, which I know will measure quite a bit wider.
