i've always run with gutted cats in the stock y pipe, and when i switched from the stock catback to a custom bent 2.5" single out with a flowmaster, i noticed quite an increase in both low end grunt and high end pull. right now, after the 3.2 swap, 1st gear's useless after 5k at WOT.

i have a barely used K&N drop in filter that i no longer need....it improves air flow outstanding compared to stock... that was my first mod....i switchedto a k&n cone filter set up..... i would be happy to sell it to you cheap..... if u buy one your looking at 54$ around there... ill sell it too you for 30.... next i would deal with exhaust and then move to underdrive pulleys. if you wanna get serious go with bbb's and port your intake..... look on the internet and you can port ur intake yourself.....

Hey *******, pay for an ad if you want to sell something. And quit making shit up. There are no "outstanding" airflow improvements to be had with a cone filter, let alone a drop in panel. Post some data to support your BS claims, or just keep yer trap shut.

+1. Thanks Matt.

As a lot of other people have said in this post, there's really no cheap power mods for the SHO, but that also adds to the fun of owning one. Anyone can buy a Mustang, Camaro, whatever, bolt on $1k worth of parts from Summit and add 100hp.

As mentioned already, get your maintenance up to date, and look for performance stuff that goes along with the maintenance you're doing if you can. Front and top 60k service, and if you can swing it, throw in some underdrive pullies, a decent y-pipe and catback, and you'll be happy with things. There's always time to add more later.

Everytime I see one of these threads I get so hopeful! Maybe there's something nobody has mentioned before!

Then I open it and reality slaps me in the face...

Like everyone else said...get a y-pipe. After that (assuming all maintinance is done) you may want to look into suspension and brake mods. These can make the car alot more fun to drive. Try being able to take a corner at 50mph that you used to only be able to take at 35mph (do this safely of course). Something else that can improve performace is to reduce the weight of the car. If you do a search you will find all kinds of info on this. It all depends on how drastic you want to get with the weight reduction.

Well, speaking from experience with Cat-less and Y pipes. Unless you're one **** of a welder, finding an exhaust shop to do the work will be hard. And being in CA, you are going to have a hard time passing inspection.

But, as the Low End / High End debate goes, since I cut mine out and put a nice Y pipe in (the guy who cut my cats off also made a really nice "Y"), I noticed that above 3k RPM, it really breaths better and is good and loud on full throttle.
As for low end torque, I can still roast my tires with the best of 'em! Mind you I have a Gen 2 95 ATX, so I don't know how it will affect the 3.0 MTX, but I took some time off my 60 time.

As for mods, I would say to get some more performance out of the motor, do the basics first and go from there.
Plugs, Wires, upper 60k, clean the MAF, pull the silencer cone, maybe cone filter it. The Idle Air Bypass (i think that's the name), clean that. Make sure the butterfly's are opening right.
Clean the O2 sensors, pull the intake off and clean all the crap out of that.

By doing all that, I got mine running damn good, and have some kills under my belt. Not too bad for a 187k.

And if you are a do-it yourselfer, this is kind of an odd one.
Actually, a really odd one. Go to a junk yard, look in the GM section, the Cadillac section to be exact.
Look for a late 90's Caddy CTS / STS. Pop the hood and take the strut mount. The bolt pattern matches the rear strut mounts on our SHO's.
Then look for a late 80's / early 90's caddy fleetwood. That strut mount fits the front strut mounts on or SHO's as well.
Depending on what the junkyard charges, easy and cheap ways to make the SHO handle a little better!

Probably already said, but along with cleaning the heack out of the intake you could port out the seconday runners and gasket match it to the heads. Just use something tho cover the intake holes so you don't get any metal in there. You could talk to a few machine shops in the area and see what they would charge to machine out your butterflies as well.
