not alot of money in my poket these days, and i was wondering about cheap mods. such as removing my cats intake systems and the like. any advice or tried and true mothods would be very helpfull and much appretiated. i ask about the cats because someone once told me that the stock sho motor was diesined to run on a very specific amount of back pressure and that changing that with out any engine mods would decrease power. is this true?

Removing the cats can be of use but in the case of the MTX a better y-pipe helps a lot like our y-pipe: SHO Source

Removing the cats can increase the top end a little over high flow cats but there is a little loss on the low end.

I also see your in CA and you have to have cats. It will be hard to pass inspection without.

You might want to check out SHOCAL: Here

There are no real cheap mods. You can remove the intake silencer for some more sound after that you need to spend some money. Maintenance is a really good place to start though, like the 60k. If you are in So Cal I can help.

Dont worry about back pressure , its an urban myth.

Im not saying you can go crazy with a 5in pipe , but on a stock or lightly modified sho , no more then 2.5in or its gonna be overkill.

Im running a 3in exhaust , but mine is heavily modified.

Oh and cheap ways to add power on a SHO , aint gonna happen.

You want cheap power for your SHO?

Sell it and buy a mustang.

There is no such thing as "cheap" power for a SHO. Nitrous is about the only cheap power mod out there, and if you haven't done all your maintenance first, hoo boy - watch ouut.

How much hp can you expect to gain with the high flow y-pipes?

14 hp for the equal length y uprade with high flow cats. Best bang for the buck with an MTX, but Like the man said above, there is no such thing as cheap power adders for the SHO. With the catted one, and the stock catback, the exhaust sounds much better and will have more low end torque than a catless Y.

I highly doubt this.

But it will sound better.

MTX = Manual transaxle
ATX = Automatic transaxle

Since you have a '91, you have a MTX since all gen 1's were manual transmissions.

Catelss will improve horsepower at high rpm, while low end torque is higher with the high flow catted one. For the street, low end torque is what is needed with the Yamaha and makes it more drivable I noticed the improvement right away, although not dramatic, during normal low rpm driving.

i have a barely used K&N drop in filter that i no longer need....it improves air flow outstanding compared to stock... that was my first mod....i switchedto a k&n cone filter set up..... i would be happy to sell it to you cheap..... if u buy one your looking at 54$ around there... ill sell it too you for 30.... next i would deal with exhaust and then move to underdrive pulleys. if you wanna get serious go with bbb's and port your intake..... look on the internet and you can port ur intake yourself.....

The Y pipes have been shown to add about 7 hp for a cheap one, and 10-11 hp for a good one. If you look at the rear bank cat notice the right angle that the pipe makes. That 90 degree abrupt turn kills flow. Even the cheaper aftermarket Y's improve upon this.

The addition helps all accross the rev range but is particularly noticeable at higher rpm.

don't put a dime into modifications until your maintenance is caught up, otherwise, your mods are useless. once you've got all that out the way, start saving your pennies for the parts you'll inevitably break. speed costs money. there is no cheap way to make big power in a SHO.

Pick 2.

Equal length y-pipe is said to make 11 more to the wheels.

As far as catless vs. catted, while granted I have an ATX, but I do feel a bit more down low with the catted pipe.
