Three days ago my 1995 ATX (213k miles) started behaving oddly. When I shift from P to D, the car goes to enter 1st gear and the whole car bumps and makes a hard noise. When I'm driving and slowing down to come to a stop, the shift from 2nd into 1st makes the same bump and hard noise.

Everything else seems fine. No hard shifting or noises after I get going. I also just checked my auto trans fluid - the level is fine.

One day ago I started hearing the noise in this video:

Sorry for the poor lighting. I think you guys will see the general area where the noise is coming from.

the audio in that video is really bad. For what it's worth here's what happened to my sho - came to a stop light - light turned green - car hit 1-2 shift big bang/thud then nothing but whining - no foward - no reverse - only whining. Check you trans fluid for metal shavings, color and smell.

Could be the pump bearing in the trans getting ready to fail for the whining noise. But yeah, sounds like the fluid is down a little.

Yeah.... I'd start taking the transmission out!... It will be cheaper that way! That trans, is toast! If the pump bearing goes out! It's going to take out the whole trans! good luck

His car will make a hard shift every so often on the 1-2 shift. I'm shocked the trans has lasted this long. Hes had the car since before it had 100k on it, and he said hes NEVER changed the fluid.

If you never change the fluid, I'm shocked it didn't hit the dust before this, I'd change everything at about 25,000 miles or so! I'd change mine alittle sooner! change the filter also!

Another Richmonder eh? We've got several in the area now. I think it's finally time for a Richmond meet :thumb:
Maybe a monthly lunch or meal somewhere?

id say with that milage it is shot but hey maybe not, a worn tranny should slip between shifts but if its grabbing that means the clutch packs are still good, so maybe there is hope in reviving this tranny, line pressure when shifting from park to any gear is usually decreased by the epc (electronic pressure control solenoid) same as between the lower gears the pressure is normally decresed for driver comfort, on the ax4s tranny that you have these solenoids have a high fail rate, the 3rd gen ax4n taurus tranny had an upgraded epc that was more acurate and does not fail as easily as the ax4s, the ax4n solenoid is a form of an upgrade done in most ax4s rebuilds, the solenoid can be replaced in the car and is located under the valve body cover, i did it in my tranny on my 93 sho and it worked for a few weeks but my tranny was already shot from running at full line pressure for 8,000 miles, worth a shot i think, there avalable online for around 40 dollars, or i guess you could go to the junk yard, good luck and im impressed that your tranny has gone so far, mine quit at 132,000. now its a mtx =]

Good information Miles but good God man please read up on the use of a period (not the dreaded feminine related matter).

Is it me or has there been a ridiculous amount of garbled poorly written posts lately? I mean at least Miles's spelling is on point and it's readable, I've been seeing things I just don't understand lately.

Ha, we could try. The OP is a friend of mine who got me into SHOs. I'm still trying to buy his black 92 from him so I'll actually have one. Of course, if the trans is broken in his 95, maybe I'll give him a 2 for 1 deal. 3.2 swap anyone?
